Making people and ideas findable

Saw a couple of videos this morning from an intelligent and typically well-spoken business owner. Somehow he has experienced a disconnect between the use of videos as a "new, cool" medium and the use of videos as the best manner in which that specific message will be seen, heard, and UNDERSTOOD. He was positioned in front of a blah wall, his head was tilted nearly the entire time (which made it look as if he was questioning his own thoughts), and there was no passion or "oomph" or authority in his voice or his eye contact. It was as if he was just doing it to say he uses video. Questions for you all: what elements of video production support the messages and which elements distract from the messages? When you see and hear a content expert on video, what makes him/her sound and look credible and professional? What recommendations on video blogs would you give a business owner who wants to come across as the ultimate advisor to others now that you've seen several videos?

with the right delivery and content video is a great tool, but not everybody should use it, it can be tough to pull off.

...and many of those can be coached to do quite well with video. A good public speaking coach can bring out the strengths, get someone to strrrretch into the necessary skills, and build on technique.

This is a complex problem. I think that 60% of the time, if the speaker "knows his stuff," it will shine through on the video even if the production quality is less than perfect. But sadly, the other 40% of video pitches can suffer horribly from poor speaking skills. Some people should simply refrain from doing video because they just aren't cut out for it.

Passion, passion, passion. If it does not come out from the speaker's heart, I don't really care how slick his video is. Course, that's just me.

You have to ask questions with enthusiasm, you have to point out that his head is crooked, you have to know to look for a better background and provide experienced lighting . . . but most importantly, you must have the right questions and answers to best promote the message, product or company. That's the most important part, so work out the copy first and don't try to use your Flip HD cam.
