Inventories not only for insurance purposes

Most people think of having an inventory for disaster preparedness and recover - the purpose of remembering and proving ownership of items to an insurance company or police department. Here at Hartman Inventory, our inventory service includes photographs and written reports. This information has been used by our customers who have filed insurance claims. They were grateful for the quick and easy process this information allowed. Another reason to have an inventory is this: an heir to the estate… Continue

Beg, plead, grovel to win tickets

Contest for Indy Flower & Patio Show tickets

I'm blogging for the Indiana Flower and Patio Show this year. I'll be discussing tips for a good experience, what to expect to find there, "meet the exhibitor" and reflections of my personal experience when I attend. My first post offered friendly advice to the exhibitors from someone who has been through the grueling days of a trade show (me). Shortly after, I… Continue

Why I spend time on Twitter

My first response when people ask me why I spend time on Twitter is to say I'm not "spending time" as that term usually implies. To me, spending time means wasting time. I'm promoting my home inventory business by. I'm connecting. I'm marketing. I'm meeting people who I can help and who can help me. For instance, I met J.Sewell Perkins (@TheSCICoach) on Twitter. She wrote her 1st-person (very hilarious)… Continue

Nintendo's Wii causing insurance claims?

I've been hearing and reading stories lately of increased insurance claims due to Nintendo's Wii. Yes, that's right - video game-related insurance claims! Men, women and children are enjoying the Wii because of the opportunity for interaction while playing the wide variety of games, including tennis, golf, bowling and even the Olympics. Unfortunately, this activity (much better than sitting on a couch pushing a button or two) is what has caused the filing of many insurance claims. Rather than p… Continue

7 Things About Me For Smaller Indiana

My friend Theresia Whitfeld tagged me to participate in the Seven Things About Me that's spreading around the Smaller Indiana social network. This is fun! 1 - I was born in Alliance, Ohio and moved to Sandusky, Ohio when I was 10. Lived in Traverse City, Michigan for one year, then back to Sandusky. Indy became home in 1986. 2 - My twin (you've all heard that everyone has a twin somewhere?) and I met at summ… Continue

Disaster preparation for small businesses

How quickly can your company get back to doing business after a tornado, fire, flood or computer crash? Every year, thousands of companies are unprepared. The US Department of Labor states that over 40% of small businesses that experience a disaster never reopen, and of the remaining companies, at least 25% will close within 2 years. There are 4 main categories that will help small business owners prepare for disasters. Continuity plans Most business owners agree that having a plan is i… Continue

Network even if you aren't looking for business

I have been to networking meetings when the conversation includes people stating what they’re currently looking for to help grow their business. Sometimes a person replies that they don’t need anything. Business is great, revenues are on target, they’re working the amount of hours they want to work, and their goals are being met. So, why are they still networking? The first and foremost reason to network is to meet people and build relationships. Business might be good at the moment, but you ne… Continue

Small business owners: think BIG

One of my honors as a Vice President of Rainmakers - the fastest growing networking group in Indiana - is to give a brief 'wrap-up' presentation at the close of some of the meetings. A unique feature of Rainmakers is that we do an activity each meeting that focuses on marketing, goal-setting, accountability, motivation, etc. A recent activity allowed me to use a personal experience to show how important it is to THINK BIG. A Million Dollar Idea asks us to be creative, to be wild about a marketi… Continue

A Twitter experiment

On January 4th, while tweeting on Twitter, I saw an invitation from @scottyhendo to take part in an experiment. Always willing to try something new, I was one of the first to reply that “I’m game.” Then he wrote back: "Experiment: Use search.twitter.com to search random word (i.e. chocolate). Follow 3 people who come up. And follow 1st 3 they've @ replied. 2:38 PM Jan 4th from TweetDeck” The random word I chose was “believe”, mainly because recently social media expert @ChrisBrogan sugg… Continue

The top 10 things I'm grateful for

So often we tend to look at what's wrong, sad, bad or depressing in our lives. Instead, if we look at what's right, happy, good, uplifting, joyous, fulfilling, energizing and motivating we would make it a better world just because of our positive energy. (And did you notice I have many more 'good' words than 'bad'?) So, I am using this final post of 2008 to share the things for which I am most grateful: 1. Mike is, of course, number 1. He is my best friend, husband of many years, busine… Continue

Resolution or goal?

I've been thinking about new year resolutions lately. I haven't made one in years because I never stick to them. But this year, while working on my marketing calendar, I realized that I do have GOALS. The difference, as far as I'm concerned, is that resolutions are just statements about what I want to happen or plan to do. Goals, on the other hand, are written down and have a plan of action. Your thoughts? Continue

Holidays - a time for taking pictures

The holidays are here – Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Years Eve – and with them come opportunities to ask people to say “Cheese!”. Open houses, school programs, parties, dinners and family gatherings all encourage people to capture the events on camera. While you have the cameras out, use this time to photograph all of your holiday decorations, too. If you don’t have a personal property inventory already compiled, this is the perfect time to start one. You’ll have holiday and seasonal decoration… Continue

Timely advice - the holidays are a perfect time to update your home inventory

We receive gifts this time of year, many of which replace something old or worn out. And some of us take advantage of the sales and purchase new items for ourselves. It's important to add these items to your inventory (assuming you've taken my suggestion and created one - or called an inventory provider to do it for you). Well, there is something else that must be done as part of your updates. Remove the items you no longer own. By keeping your business or home inventory current, you'll make it… Continue

No one told me I needed to know how many pair of shoes I own!

Rather than Self-promotion, I decided to let Deborah Butler, a loan originator at Star Financial Bank, do the talking. Her story demonstrates how quickly your life can be turned upside down... When I first heard about Hartman Inventory's service, I thought that it was a good idea. However, I kept delaying scheduling an appointment, making excuses like being too busy. Well, here is why I regret putting it off. On May 30th 2008, my home was hit by a tornado. By the grace of God, no one wa… Continue

Don't put your boxes by the curb

Drive through any neighborhood on ‘trash day’ following the holiday, and you’ll see empty boxes upon empty boxes showing what a wonderful Christmas everyone had. Even though the economy is slow this year, you’ll see that plenty of people received new desktop computers and printers, laptops, televisions, appliances, and more. A box showing a picture of a jewelry armoire will state something quite loudly: there is a lot of jewelry in this house! What a perfect opportunity for burglars to decide wh… Continue

Rain, not dam malfunction, caused floods in Indiana

Piggy-backing on Tom's information about the floods in Indiana, this article reassures us that the infrastructure was in good condition. The culprit of the floods? Mother nature - way too much rain! A US Geological Survey shows that torrential rain, not a dam malfunction, caused the flooding in June that affected one of every seven structures in Columbus, Indiana. The report summarized reasons for the event, detailed its effects and illustrated its severity with maps, charts and rainfall… Continue

Technology - time wasters or time savers?

I'm sure you've experienced this scenario: you’re answering a voice mail message when you get a notice that a text message has arrived. Sitting in front of your computer, your mail icon indicates receipt of a new email while your IM screen pops open. What to respond to first? Is this a typical day? Unfortunately, most likely it is. As we struggle to stay up with the various communication options available, many people feel they are wasting more time than they are saving, due to constant interru… Continue

Small businesses should embrace social networking

My Google Alerts for Hartman Inventory came to me on Wednesday, as always, but something I didn't expect was there...a post by Paula Henry, a local real estate agent in Indianapolis. Paula's blog called Indy Real Estate Talk, discussed how valuable and necessary an inventory is. She mentioned that if you do create an inventory, you'll most likely find a lot of items that you forgot… Continue
