7 things about me you probably didn't want to know

Ok, so I got tagged by Erik Deckers, who probably only included me because we had coffee today and he didn't want to hurt my feelings. But he's The Man and he's not to be dissuaded so here I go: 1. I was born in Manteo, NC, a little town on the coast. My dad was in the Navy, stationed at Cape Hatteras, and when my mom went into labor, they couldn't find the base doctor so they had to take the FERRY to the mainland and went to the first clinic they could find. There's a famous black and white st… Continue

Giving back in the Spirit of the Season

It's no surprise, we're all strapped right now, some worse than others. If your business is down and you find yourself with extra time on your hands, consider an altruistic gift that may have an additional benefit. Around this time of year, the Indianapolis Business Journal starts listing the Holiday Wish List for non-profits in town, which started with today's issue on page 34. The list is small so far, but grows every issue till it covers several pages. How about doing some good with that ext… Continue

It's a Mitzvah

In Judaism, it's called a Mitzvah. The word can have a number of different meanings, one of which is "commandment" and another is "covenant." But when someone says that it's a mitzvah, it means something like "righteous good deed." Sort of, there's not really a good translation. It's definitely not charity, because charity denotes that you're helping because it makes you feel like you've helped, or because you feel sorry for them. With a mitzvah, there's no pity involved. You do it because it's… Continue

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

It's always a good idea to know who you're doing business with. It's something I try to tout as an advantage to my clients, the personal service, the one-on-one, the fact that no one will be doing the work but me, so if you have questions or problems, the buck stops here. My business is growing like crazy so at some point, I'm either going to have to turn away clients or hire help, but I'll hold on to this as long as I can.… Continue

Disclaimer: I hate theatre.

Ok, so maybe that's a little strong, but I'm really not a fan. I've always been a "film" kind of girl. The artifice of plays, especially musicals, just leave me scratching my head. Why did that character just break out in song and why are the rest of the characters not locking her up for singing to a blank wall? That said, I was invited, along with Steve Semester and Brett Healey, by fellow Smoosier Amy Stark to see "The Producers" at Beef & Boards and since it was my last chance to have an… Continue

Why are social networking sites so "pale?"

One of my degrees is from Florida A & M University, an HBCU, Historically Black College and University (Go Rattlers!) It's where I got my photography and graphic design degree, which considering what my business is, has been the training that pays my bills. A lot of people have asked, when finding out I went there, what was it like being in the minority? I reply that the experience was what I made of it. Sure, I got a lot of questions from guys like Tony, Jabari, Cousin Willie and Ralph abou… Continue

Titus Pullo for President

Owning your own business and keeping your own schedule has a lot of benefits, especially if you work from a home office. I can work in my pajamas if I want to, I can pop on Smaller Indiana to check in and not feel guilty about it, and on slow days (not that I have many of those) I can crawl into bed for a half-hour nap to recharge my batteries. I love what I do, so I don't have to worry about not being motivated to work, and often hit my computers and start working before my guys have left the d… Continue

"Tell me why, Oh, I loooove Muh-uhndays!"

I love Monday. I didn't always but it's a division in time that's grown on me over the years. And I especially love Mondays like today; overcast, rainy, maybe a little stormy. A chill on the air makes it even better, but with the temp hitting the mid-80's today, well, I guess you can't have everything. A day like this opens up unlimited possibilities. You can keep your sunshine, and your blue skies, give me some grey clouds and I'm a happy camper. Why Mondays, specifically, is a different thing… Continue

Hi, I'm Rae. I'm White.

Ok, some very nice Smoosiers have been encouraging me to start a blog, but I've resisted their gentle persuasions, insisting that I don't have much to say that anyone would want to read on a semi-regular basis. Or at least not much to say that would be fit for polite society, gentle ears, or even normal humans. I have A LOT to say that would be deemed subversive, pornographic or just plain ookey. There's some freaky-deakyness lurking beneath the outgoing exterior of this chunky 44-year-old mom.… Continue
