Two films address issues of aging

The Heartland Film Festival, taking place in Indianapolis through October 24, will offer multiple screenings of "Another Harvest Moon," an independent film about four elderly Americans coping with life in a nursing home. "When Did I Get Old: Reflections on Aging Today" is a documentary that provides examples of aging that cause us to examine assumptions, explore possibilities and make plans for personal and community action. Produced by WFYI Television in cooperation with the University of Indi… Continue

It works if you work it.

Remember Jill* from my office? The one who is both clueless and brilliant at the same time? Well, yesterday morning, Jill was looking for me. I was at an offsite meeting from 8am to noon. I had the meeting scheduled on my electronic calendar, which is accessible by everyone in the office. Because of the nature of the meeting (we were running a focus group), I had my cell phone (… Continue

What a difference a day makes

Earlier this week, I had a little pity party for myself on my personal blog, in the form of a post called "I don't wanna." Today, I'm in a much better frame of mind, having attended the Smaller Indiana, Bigger Ideas conference yesterday. Who knew a business-ish conference could be inspiring, or at the least, uplifting? In the Twitter stream yesterday, someone smartly summed up the conference theme as "Passion. Connect. Execute… Continue

Tweet this Smoosier to the Biggest Loser finale

I LOVE watching the Biggest Loser (admittedly, often with a bowl of ice cream on my lap). Every week I watch the show and then blog it. Over the past couple of seasons, I've developed a bit of a following of people who come to my blog to read what I have to say and to add their own opinions to the discussion. So, I'm trying to mount a Twitter campaign to get NBC to fly me out to live blog/Tweet the finale next week. If you Twitter and think my idea is a cool one, please tweet this: @JillianMic… Continue

Moon Over My Mammy

So today was the big mammogram day. And I have to say, what's the big deal? I arrived a little early and enjoyed a few minutes of the Today show before the perky blonde tech (Andrea was her name) called me back. She led me to a small changing room that could have been at home in a fancy women's clothing boutique, except for the "Mammowipes" in case I had on any deodorant I needed to wipe off. I didn't. I stripped from the waist up and put on my mammogown, then went to an interior waiting area… Continue

How I almost died on a Georgia mountain

The one thing that I wanted to do for sure when I planned this trip to see my brother and his family was to go to Stone Mountain. When I was a little girl, my aunt and uncle lived in Stone Mountain and we made a couple of trips to the park for a walk up the mountain. The mountain is the largest piece of exposed granite in the world. As if that weren't enough, there is a memorial carving on the side of the mountain that depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War: Confederate President Jef… Continue

Mockingbird sings a powerful song

Most couples with kids can define their lives in two parts: BC and AC -- before children and after children. In our BC life, Mike and I did lots of cool cultural things, like going to the theater (the kind where the floor is not sticky with spilled pop). Tonight we had a BC date and went to see "To Kill a Mockingbird" at the Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT). After we picked up our tickets at Will Call in the IRT's new lobby, we checked our coats (and Mike's ever present Indiana Jones hat) before… Continue

77 minus 70 things about me...

1. I was born in Minnesota, raised in Oklahoma, Indiana and Ohio. But I consider myself a Hoosier. 2. I am married with 3 kids, which I've found to be a lot like having 4 kids. 3. I have found that I'm a better mom as a working mom...to a point. My pe… Continue

The "I" in Inauguration

What I was feeling on Inauguration Day... It seems like I shouldn't let this day pass without some commentary about today's Inauguration Ceremony in which Barack Obama became President of the United States. I'm usually decidedly quiet about political matters, but for some reason feel compelled to break my silence -- briefly -- today. I did not vote for Barack Obama. My vote had nothing to do with race or with single-issue politics, rather an opinion formed over the course of the campaig… Continue

High Octane Holiday Giveaway

Sometimes the Christmas season comes and goes in such a blur that aside from watching a few Christmas specials on TV, I feel like I missed the whole spirit of the season. This year, I am making a deliberate point of trying to engage the whole family in meaningful holiday activities, with one caveat -- they have to be free. So when Bargain Briana offered to hook me up with the good people at RIDEMAKERZContinue

Everybody's doing it...now let's talk about it.

Some people do it quietly. Some people are loud and obnoxious about it. Some like to take charge. Others are ok with being told what to do. Some people try to stop it while others can't wait for it to happen. Some see it laced with burden; others view it as endless opportunity. "It" is aging. Whether you're feeling the effects of age yourself, are caring for a parent or grandparent, or are making decisions today that will affect the way you age in the future, aging is one topic that affect… Continue

UIndy CAC & Noobie Inc. team up for Digital TV Connection Project

Pat Coyle's timing in posting about the transition to Digital TV could not have been better. For many seniors, particularly those with low incomes or those in poor health, the television is a critical connection to the outside world. Isolated by economy or health, these older adults rely on the television not only for entertainment, but as for important information including news and weather updates. By the end of the week, the University of Indianapolis Center for Aging & Community, in par… Continue

Try this at the office...

Looking for a way to inject a little fun into your workday? Try this game I call "Hello? Is Anyone There?" Here's how it went down at my office the other day. Many of us in my department have offices along the same hallway. One of my co-workers -- let's call her "Jill" -- has the office two doors down from me. Jill is alternately the flightiest and the smartest woman I know. Because she would eat me alive if I tried to go head to head with her on strategy or project management, I take great del… Continue

Wordless Wednesday

I recently discovered something new in the blogosphere. It's called Wordless Wednesday. Instead of blogging in their traditional mode, bloggers post an image. The idea is that the entire post is the picture, no words. But I've figured out that some people violate that a little (or a lot). Anyway, there are some cool pictures to be seen. If you want to play, create a Wordless Wednesday entry on your blog. Then register it by leaving a comment at WordlesContinue

This takes the cake.

My kids only had a half-day of school today, so I decided we needed a little "ohana" time, instead of having everyone spend the day in front of the computer or television or Xbox. But what to do? I thought of going to the indoor water park, but then I remembered Charlie's arm is still in a cast. (How could I have forgotten?!) I mentioned heading to the zoo or the Children's Museum, but Annie informed me that she's too old for those places. (How can you be too old for the zoo?!) Mike suggested… Continue

10 Tips for Terrible Parenting

At about 4am this morning I couldn't sleep and found myself whiling away the hours until daylight perusing the internet. Over at IndyMoms.com, I found a link to an article on Ten Terrible Parenting Tips. I read it and decided to make my own list of tips, which may either inspire you if you revel in mediocrity or may help you realize you're not such a bad paren… Continue

What's in a name?

Seems that names are news these days. Last week when John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate, after everyone finished asking "who is she?," many followed with the question "Where'd she get those names?," referring to her children Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig. The New York Daily News ran a story explaining some of those choices, including… Continue

The Underwear Question

There are just some conversations that even the most experienced mother cannot anticipate. Charlie brought one to me last night. Charlie: "Mom, do you wear underwear all the time?" Wanna know where this is heading? Ordinarily, I only cross-post from my personal blog to SI if I feel the post is fairly directly relevant to other Smoosiers. But I'm feeling a bit saucy tonight, so click here to read on... Continue
