A moment of insight into my autistic mind...

Not long after I found out that I had Asperger's Syndrome I wrote down these words to help me sort out my odd way of seeing the world, and my quirky way of defining life... some of these feeling are now just childhood memories some are very present... If Random Words could define Asperger’s Syndrome… “Perfection” is a box of new crayons. “Sadness” is opening my special box of new crayons and discovering them missing, used and broken. “Nausea” is a kitchen painted blue. “Comfort” is a y… Continue

Trading Post open on Saturday!

The Simpler Times Trading Post Saturday, January 17th at 2:30pm Hi Everyone, Years ago our family started a weekly Trading Day where folks from all over central Indiana could get together to swap things... homemade goods, homegrown veggies, good books, fabric scraps, children's clothing, and even services like haircuts, tutoring and pottery classes. Points were earned by sharing with others in the co-op. Several families in the community would like to participate in Trading Days once ag… Continue

Expecting Baby #8 !

Hi, We just found out that baby #8 is on the way. So far we have one son and six daughters. I'm very happy to be able to welcome another child into our happy family. Many people wonder why we want so many kids, the answer is very simple... So many children are growing up in broken homes, with parents who don't like eachother, and in families where the parents don't have much time for the children. So I think that families that are full of love should be the most productive. We feel so blessed t… Continue

Babies with Aspergers and Dyslexia

This is written by my mom, Georgia Janisse If we could know when a child is born that they have Asperger syndrome, or Dyslexia, what would we do differently? It seems that the more we know about the subject the more we realize that the human race needs these people and their creative gifts or their love of knowledge. And we really can’t give either diagnosis in infancy because the challenging aspects of each can be normal behavior of a typical preschooler, and the blessing aspects can b… Continue

Lost in Italy

Wrong Train, Wrong Bus & A Castle in the Rain We heard the sound of the approaching train as we waited at the small Italian station. Just as the train slowed to a stop an announcement was made over the speaker. We didn't understand the language, but we should have gotten a clue when half the waiting crowd relocated to another platform. We got on the train anyway. Well, the train ended up traveling in the opposite direction of our destination. We had that familiar feeling that we were in fo… Continue

How can a messy person keep a clean house? Try the Clean House Diet.

So what is the skinny girl secret to a clean house? I know that this seems like an odd question but I believe that the answer to perfect housekeeping is also the answer to this question. You see, the best way to lose the extra pounds is very simple. You just follow around a skinny person and do exactly what they do. I believe that this must work 95% of the time, as long as there are no medical imbalances causing either condition. I’ve been chubby ( I gain and lose about 50 pounds regula… Continue

Happy Bedtime, Happy Potty Training and No More Tantumns

How to put a baby to bed peacefully When my babies are little they tend to fall asleep when they are being cuddled. They love to be cuddled, and when they cuddle and they have a nice full tummy, they will peacefully fall asleep when they are tired. I don't force an unnatural schedule on my children, but I study their behavior and pay attention to their needs so that we can all be happy and peaceful. Many people have trouble with their babies and toddlers when it's time for bed. But with… Continue

On Pondering the Possibility of Another Great Depression

I am America, and I am free. Today I am free to flip a switch, and light appears to fill the room. Tomorrow I will still be free, even if I must light a candle instead. I am America, and I am free. Today I can fill up my tank, and travel to the city. Tomorrow I will still be free, even if I must borrow my neighbor’s horse to travel to the nearest farm. I am America, and I am free. Today I can go into the grocery store and fill my cart with food. Tomorrow I will still be free, even if I must go i… Continue

A Stamp Collection for Five Generations

Collections Collections. Growing up I always had collections. Bug collections. Coin Collections. Cereal Box Collections. Sea Shell Collections. I was a treasure hunter with my Pressed Flowers, Handmade Boxes, Acorns, Rocks, Fossils, Baseball Cards, Cats, pet mice, and a Stamp Collection. You should have seen my room, it looked like a museum blew up! But of course I had it all organized, my way. I was one of those kids that was always doing a science experiment, inventing something,… Continue

Is freedom too dangerous for the common people like me?

Freedom is Dangerous... (So control your neighbor as yourself.) Perhaps America is losing her greatness because her people are losing their freedom. Perhaps America is less prosperous because her people have less freedom. Perhaps America is weaker, because her people are no longer free. Perhaps the people of America are struggling to thrive in this new economy because they no longer have the freedom to thrive in their own homes. We have become so comfortable in the past fifty or so years that… Continue

finding my Castle, on my way to Russia

When my plans fall apart, and life seems all mixed up, it's time to get ready for an adventure. By age twenty I knew all about faith and adventure... I guess that things always get messed up when you make plans to go to Russia. I held an airline ticket in one hand, and my travel visa in the other. My ticket said "June 4th", my Visa said I could not enter Russia until July 1st. Opps! I had a flight to catch in three days things were all mixed up. I spent the day on the phone with embassies, air… Continue

The Childhood Dreamer that I was...

PRINCESS OF THE WOODLAND... There is a season, even a day that seems to glow in my memories. I was fourteen years old on a chilly day in early spring. The sunlight had found a path through the budding trees to the bare floor of my cabin. Wrapped around me was a handmade patchwork quilt, my shelves were lined with canned goods and my simple pottery collection. A piece of calico fabric hung in the open doorway, and a sparrow perched quietly in the high window. I was very still and quiet so as no… Continue

Growing up with Asperger's Syndrome

Should we insist that all birds swim, because the penguins do? Should we demand that a fish learn to fly, or try desperately to turn the green eyes to blue? And if each child has a special calling, and a purpose to fulfill, should every child learn the same information by the same method? Should we all excel at math instead of poetry? If music comes so naturally, should we set the gift aside, to drill our children on their spelling, and make them want to hide. If you son wants to read dictionar… Continue
