Top 10 Rejected Slogans for Indiana

So last night, a friend of mine, Amy Stark, put out the word on Twitter to hashtag Indiana to see if we could get the Hoosier State on the Twitter map, so to speak. So I did it the best way I know how and that's by compiling a Top 10 list of terrible terrible slogans for my beloved home state. I got great responses from the Tweet-o-sphere so I thought, why not put the whole list here for all to enjoy. Anyway, I hope you enjoy these nuggets. 10. #Indiana: Kentucky's hat 9. #Indiana: The state th… Continue

Home Security... How much is too much?

With burglaries on the rise, we have seen an increase in calls from homeowners. In many cases, either they or their neighbors have suffered a burglary. In others, they just saw a report about the trend on the news. Whatever the case, in this post, I'll deal with people who have been in their homes for a period of time but are just now considering the isssue of Home Security. And while things like window latches, proper landscaping techniques, and outdoor lighting all contribute to this subject,… Continue

Tis the season...

In case any of you missed this item, it appeared in the IBJ Email blast yesterday. For those of you in Hamilton County, especially, you'll want to read this, but I suspect that most Indiana counties are experiencing a similar trend: Robberies on upswing in northern suburbs Northern Indianapolis suburbs are seeing a rise in thefts, with the greatest increases coming in Hamilton County. They include hikes of 29 percent in Carmel, 23 percent in Fishers and 17 percent in Noblesville. The figuresContinue

Fire Safety During the Holidays

With the holiday season barreling down upon us, it occurred to me that this would be a perfect time to bring up fire safety. While residential fires increase steadily as the temperature falls, the three-day period of December 24-26 is a particularly dangerous period from a home fire standpoint. According to the United States Fire Administration fire deaths, injuries, and dollar loss increase an average of 50%, 61%, and 43%, respectively. But… Continue

Ahhhhh Trick or Treating!

One thing I really miss about my childhood is Trick or Treating. And back in the day, we did it right. None of this start at 3, end at sundown, mom and dad in the minivan crap. My buddy or my brother and I would head out AT sundown and go until we could walk no further or until our ba… Continue

So who's to blame for this mess?

OK, I just posted a blog during which I reveal my uncertainty over what I'll do with my votes in one week. The discussion which followed, as I'm sure will be the case here, devolved and got off point with one of the participants trying to lay the current state of our economy firmly at the desk of one George W. Bush. Why not? He's a lame duck. He's an easy target. He's personally caused every other tragedy known to man, so why not this one too? I won't defend Bush on areas where I believed he's… Continue

A Republican's Moral Dilemna

I know that every political campaign has its ugliness. I know that negative campaigning works. Studies prove it and if it didn't, it wouldn't be such a powerful tool. Some might say that what I'm about to say is naive but I will contend that I want more from my candidates. John McCain is about to lose my vote. In the past 2-3 weeks, the McCain camp, in my opinion, has really ramped up the negative ad campaigns. Not all of the messages have been "approved" by John McCain to be sure. Well, not of… Continue

Making the Monon Trail Safe

As printed in the September 16, 2008 Metro+State section of The Indianapolis Star, a colleague and I were hired by the City to repair the damaged Code Blue Emergency Call Boxes on the Monon Trail. In the wake of recent violence and the subsequent bad press, the Indy Parks Gre… Continue

New Burglary Concerns

As a security professional, I'm always on the lookout for the newest trends. What are the burglars doing? Knowing that typically gives me some insight as to where my business will be. Kind of a "glass is half empty" way to look at things, I suppose, but that's the business I have chosen. It seems that the increased number of foreclosures has had a direct effect on crime. According the the August 19 issue of The Indianapolis Star, "areas with the most foreclosures also have the highest crime rat… Continue

A Whole New Season; or How I Nearly Caused Spygate 2

Now, don't get me wrong. Baseball is my first love and being a Cub fan, this year has been heaven. But as a broadcaster, football tops my list and I, for one, am very happy to see that football is back - at least at the high school level. You see, I call high school football games for a AudioSportsOnline.com. I take a lot of pride in my games and I hope that my enthusiasm comes through. As a broadcaster, I have two goals. My first, and most important, is to paint the picture for my audience. I… Continue

Just about ready to give up...

You know how in life you're good at some things and not so much at others? Take me, for example (apprapo since it's my damned blog). I think I'm a pretty funny guy. I'm a pretty decent play by play announcer. I make a great barbecue sauce (thanks Dad!). And I rock as an uncle - just ask Addison who thinks I'm "silly." But one thing that I'm just not any good at is dating. I'm not smooth or cool or hip or whatever the hell the right word is when it comes to women. I talk to damned much. I don't… Continue

Simultaneously the funniest and most disturbing thing I've seen this year

So yesterday, as the high school football is a mere two weeks off, I toddled on down to the local news stand at 54th and College. I stroll in and they have a display of about 8 or 10 different Fantasy Football magazines. Guess what? They all say Brady and Manning are the top two QBs and to stay away from Bears QBs. But alas, no high school football mag. Undeterred, I strolled around the racks to see if it was on a shelf. I was befuddled by just how many titles are out there. And just how many "… Continue

America's Long National Nightmare is Finally Over

Once again, our world is in perfect balance. The oil crisis is over. The troops are coming home. Formerly evicted homeowners will return to the houses from whence they were tossed. That's right, Brett Favre has a team. Breathe easy, America. Honestly, I knew I was overdosing on Brett Favre when, while eating lunch downtown at the Elbow Room (which has great bison burgers, by the way) the TVs which were tuned to ESPN were showing nothing but Favre. It was the Sportscenter which showed the curren… Continue

Sometimes, Colin Cowherd is too cynical for his own good

I just heard something on the radio that really ticked me off. Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio was talking about the Home Run Derby las night and dismissed Josh Hamilton as "a nice story." Not a great story, which it is, but "nice." His rationale is that Josh Hamilton chose to do an illegal drug. I'ts not like he was stricken with cancer. I don't argue. In fact, I would say that if I were looking at this story from that angle, I would agree. Except, I think he is seeing the story all wrong. Perhap… Continue

The Great Quake of '08

I just toured the devastation of the disaster area. The English language can scarcely describe the suffering. One guy in Louisville lost 15, maybe 16 bricks from his building. So far, the death toll has reached 0. But that barely begins to scratch the surface of the psychological damage this caused. This thing hit in the pre-dawn hours, waking weary Midwesterners from their slumber. But with only 60-90 minutes to go before their alarms went off anyway, they couldn't get back to sleep so we all… Continue

Time to send these tunes to the Old Songs' Home

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a couple of passions. These are things that I really get enjoyment out of. First and foremost are my beloved Chicago Cubs. Since the carefree days of my childhood I have eagerly awaited the promise of April, endured the swoon of June or July, and the inevitable crash in September in the impossible hope that maybe THIS year is THE year. When your true love causes you such pain and heartache, however, a man can be driven to some truly horrible things. Hence m… Continue

How much good can Smaller Indiana do?

Some of you have already received this email from me. This is legit. I've talked to the Harris Bank that's become the epicenter for this quest to help save the life of a young 19 year old man from Noblesville. The article is attached and this information has come to me from my friend in Kiwanis who'd received it from the Fishers Station Kiwanis Club, which has a member that is personally familiar with his situation. You may have already read about it in the Star but the lifetime maximum has alre… Continue

Opening Day

I don't care what Bud Selig says, Opening Day does NOT happen in Japan! Spring is here, my friends. Hope springs eternal, especially for us poor lemmings who year after year line up for our tickets to the group denial that is Cubs baseball. Every year starts the same - we all believe that this year is different because of some guy we got in the off season or because of some young player developing or for some undefinable cosmic reason like in 1998 when the Cubs went to the playoffs. That just ha… Continue

Mike and the Mechanics

So I bought this CD - #1 hits of the 80's from BMG Music. Yes, I know, it's not that great a deal but I just haven't gotten around to canceling my membership so I can re-enroll and get more free CDs. Anyway, I got this CD to round out my order of a couple of George Thorogood CDs and a couple of Rush CDs. It's not bad - Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, Steve Winwood, Robert Palmer. I can dig it. But then it's got this awesome song that I almost forgot about: The "Living Years" by Mike and the Mecha… Continue
