Douglas Karr An Open Letter to Indiana about Life Sciences

There's no doubt how important Roche and Eli Lilly are to our economy here in central Indiana. As well, I'm forever appreciative of the work these folks do and the impact it will have on the human race. I have friends at both companies and have helped them with their technology and social media strategies. I'm looking forward to seeing how technology will transform their industries. That said, my next remarks are not meant to anger the industry... rather to promote a different one. Indiana - pl… Continue

Bill Bean Frog In The Kettle Thing

Slowly turn up the heat on the frog in the kettle and it won't know until it's too late that it's frog soup. We know the principle. Or do we? I was reading in the newspaper (how anachronistic of me) that some of our "progressive" Senators have introduced a new bill that would fine people who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage. Sounds reasonable. Pfft! This is… Continue

Mike Seidle Can we break the cycle of tax insanity?

After reading the post on Michael Moore's GM ideas it really hit me how tough it's going to be for our nation to become less wasteful and more efficient. Why? Our government is funded by taxing an ever increasing amount of waste - and if we become more efficient in any way other than producing more stuff to sell, we bankrupt some level of government:
  • Constant redevelopment creates jobs and lower and middle class income tax (the only kind that is really paid) for the federal and state g

Gus Pearcy Who should preserve our heritage?

Recently, I've been pondering the responsibilities of government. Of course, everything is a matter of choices, but now a local government is taking a poll to find out if taxpayers want them to spend money to save an old barn representative of the culture of the area. The Town of Avon is polling residents to see if they should spend $25,000 to $50,000 to save an old horse barn that sits in Avon Town Hall Park. The barn is estimated between 30 and 50 years old. It is in need of some roof repair… Continue

Bill Bean Tax 'Em If You Got 'Em

"In Indiana, about $1 in federal tax will combine with the state's 99.5-cent tax to bring the average cost of a pack of cigarettes to near $5 by April 1.", from Indy Star article. They say this will result in more people quitting and fewer youths picking up the habit. People are better off not smoking, from a health perspective. No argument from me on that point. But if this is a public health initiative then… Continue

NealTaflinger How to grow up in one day - Taffy becomes a guest lecturer and gets an accountant

On the recommendation of a co-worker, Indiana University professor Nancy Comiskey invited me to Ernie Pyle Hall in Bloomington to speak to her feature writing class about multimedia storytelling. I rarely feel like an adult but standing at the front of that class, dispensing career advice to men and women eight, nine, 10 years younger than me - well, I felt like a grown-ass man. I have spent a large chunk of my life in front of crowds or in the public eye yet I found myself getting anxious in t… Continue

Ben McCann Funding a Charitable Life Estate Plan Using Life Insurance

No crystal ball can reveal what will ultimately happen with the house part of your estate. Although, the house is often a donor’s largest asset in his or her estate, its value can fluctuate depending on factors beyond a donor’s control. One way to plan around this uncertainty is to create a “charitable life estate” complete with enough life insurance to replace the “would be” value of the home. What is a “Charitable Life Estate”? A charitable life estate involves gifting a reside… Continue

John Qualls Solving the Financial Crisis

On vacation this week. (First in 3 years). While driving 12 hours to Syracuse I had plenty of time to think about the current financial crisis we are in. I was envisioning what I would do if I was president and the speech I would give to set the tone of my administration. Here's my plan: 1. Mortgage, Auto, Stock Market crisis. For mortgages 500,000 or less I am wiping out the balance effective Feb 1, 2009 for all US citizens. For mortgages 500,000 - 1,000,000 I am cutting them in half. Over t… Continue

Jim Brown Taxes 101

Suppose that everyday, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the… Continue

Stephen Edds On Tax Day, who exactly, is "rich?"

Today is Tax Day. Being a freelance writer, and a poor money manager, getting our taxes done at HR Block was about the same as another male-centric procedure I will have to endure at my 40 year-old check-up next month. Except that this was two hours long and there were no hugs after (doctors giving hugs ARE standard, right?) But when you’re sitting there with the taxman, certain thoughts bounce around your head: “If Election Day were April 16th, how different would our government be?” “How ma… Continue

Jeremy Williams Property Taxes

I'm sure that property taxes haven't been at the top of anyone's mind lately, but the revised assessments for Marion County were finally released today. My property taxes were set to go up by about 66% back in the fall before the Governor ordered the re-assessment. I just got the amazingly frustrating news that my house assessed for just $200 less than the "bad" assessments that were thrown… Continue

Chris Spangle The Real Reason for Reform

http://www.chris-spangle.com/2008/03/12/the-real-reason-for-reform/ By Chris Spangle | March 12, 2008 Forget the politics, although it seems as though the General Assembly can’t. Government is by the people, and for the people. So where did Indiana and the U.S. go wrong? This is the real reason for reform: Hi Abdul, My story is just one example of why you can’t just take the purchase price and figure a property tax. My house was built in 1870- an historic Irvington home. The purchase price… Continue
