Here's a question I received from one of my readers. I thought everyone could benefit from my reply so I'm including the full question and answer below.
Q: When I tried to open a Word document attachment, a pop up said it was created from a newer version of Microsoft Word and that I needed to install a compatibility pack.
When I clicked through to see what was involved to do that, it came up that it would be a big deal with a number of preliminary steps so I decided it wasn't worth the eff…

Many companies and organizations with a web presence are now starting to move forward with their web standards. This means more interactive site, better management of content, and the use of better software. Each stage in web development starts with the needs of the client and user, but sometimes those needs can not be met as easily as they should.
Currently, there are more than four browsers (with 3+ versions of each) that must be kept in mind when developing for the client. Most current brows…

Being a technology expert isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
Take this morning for instance when I was checking email about 20 minutes before I had to leave the house. It was just then that a little magical window appeared on my screen telling me that the iPhone 3.0 software was available for my iPhone.
Here's a list of reasons why a message like this should be ignored in this situation...

My dad recently asked me to settle an argument between him and my mom. My mom said she heard on the news that "it is now possible, when your cell phone is in the on position, to listen in from anywhere. This includes 'sitting in' on board meetings and stealing company secrets if one of the participants has his or her cell phone on the table in the on position." My dad, on the other hand, doesn't buy a bit of this.
When my dad first emailed this to me, I laughed at how preposterous this sounded.…

Skinning a teaching series with memorable graphics is hard task. It's hard enough to come up with a teaching series that is engaging and relevant, let alone visually stimulating. So where can you get some good ideas that not only present your message, but can event stimulate the metaphors and examples you use? Below are some helpful links that I've found along the way:…

Working with a freelance software developer is a bit different than working with a salaried software developer. A focus on results and a limited budget means the project needs to run smoothly from the start. I've written 9 tips to help you as the project sponsor:
1. Understand the problem and have a vision.
2. Trust your developer to focus on solutions.
3. Understand your role and be courageous.
4. Don’t rush the planning stage.
5. Don’t linger in the planning stage.…

In a 1943 paper, Abraham Maslow first proposed the Hierarchy of Needs. These were the needs he felt all people needed to fulfill, starting at the most basic and moving up as the needs below were met. The needs, progress from basic selfish needs to outwardly expressed ones. This progression moved through physiological, safety, belonging, esteem and ended at self-actualization.…

I'm working on a web application in my spare time. Some days that means little programming time time, others more. The hardest part is the times where nothing seems to be moving forward - the grunt work can be depressing. It is easy to look at software companies that have had phenomenal success in the past few years and feel a little jealous.
Or is it?
Jonathan Fields wrote about so-called overnight…

Not sure if Pat will consider this too commercial for a blog post, but I'm hoping with the economy as it is a company that is growing and hiring would be appreciated :-)
We are looking to add 4 more BDM's (business development managers) to start at the beginning of April. These are inside sales positions and we are looking for outgoing people with around 2 years of sales experience.
doesn't really matter what you have been selling. We actually have a couple of former campus recruiters who are…

As a business owner, you are no doubt evaluating your business in light of the current economic environment while planning your software development expenditures for this year. One consideration in your planning is to use freelancer software developers. Now, there are plenty of false assumptions about hiring independent contractors, and many companies are unaware of the benefits of hiring a freelancer. I will address some of the reasons to hire a freelancer:

Did you know I have the ability to buy a cup of coffee on my credit card 11 months in advance? And not just coffee but office supplies and Internet services as well. If you don't believe me, just take a look at my QuickBooks file. I already have dozens of recorded business expenses for December, 2009.
Ok, so I'm not really buying futuristic cups of coffee and next generation office supplies. The reason these expenses show up in December, 2009 is really due to a major flaw in the QuickBooks soft…

Imagine one day you hop in your car to drive to the grocery store to pick up a few miscellaneous items that you need to bake a batch of cookies. You haven't driven your car in 2-3 weeks because you are just coming back from a long vacation. No big deal, right? You put the key in the ignition, turn the key, put the car in drive and go about your way.
Now let's pretend your car is a Windows-based computer and you've taken the same 2-3 week hiatus from using it. This time when you put the key in t…

I love Halloween. I love watching my kids dress up in their favorite costumes running from house to house saying "trick or treat" trying to break last year's candy record. I even secretly wish that just once the Great Pumpkin would show up for Linus in the pumpkin patch.
But my love of Halloween doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. Especially when it comes to technology.
So my technology I'd like to see is the merger of Halloween and technology. I'd start by putting...…

I want to shout out and thank Nicki, honestly one of the most prolific and helpful members of this community. As I mentioned, we have started a series of blogs here at Compendium focused on Indy Restaurant review just to showcase our software. Nicki was the first member of SI to submit a review and I'm really grateful....as I'm sure Shapiro's is.

Many of you know that I'm kind of a freak for Seth Godin. Permission Marketing inspired me to start emailing and Co-found ExactTarget. I've pounded on bongos in the loft in Dobbs Ferry and it was Seth who first got me started on blogging and inspired me to write my book.
The thing is that Seth is easy to follow. His message is simple, ethical and most of all True.
We built Compendium around what we believe to be the principles he would advocate (although, Martin Luther thought that too, LOL)…
