Rhett N. Cochran Home Security... How much is too much?

With burglaries on the rise, we have seen an increase in calls from homeowners. In many cases, either they or their neighbors have suffered a burglary. In others, they just saw a report about the trend on the news. Whatever the case, in this post, I'll deal with people who have been in their homes for a period of time but are just now considering the isssue of Home Security. And while things like window latches, proper landscaping techniques, and outdoor lighting all contribute to this subject,… Continue

Patric Welch Why do software companies insist on tricking their customers?

One of the things software companies do that really irritates me is tricking users into doing something they didn't ask to do. I've talked about this before when you install a software application only to find out that a new toolbar was added to your Internet browser because the option to do this was selected by default during the installation. Well, here's a new one I just discovered while coaching a client of mine last week. My client used the Norton security suite from Symantec. Her annual s… Continue

Patric Welch What if your car ran Microsoft Windows?

Imagine one day you hop in your car to drive to the grocery store to pick up a few miscellaneous items that you need to bake a batch of cookies. You haven't driven your car in 2-3 weeks because you are just coming back from a long vacation. No big deal, right? You put the key in the ignition, turn the key, put the car in drive and go about your way. Now let's pretend your car is a Windows-based computer and you've taken the same 2-3 week hiatus from using it. This time when you put the key in t… Continue

Rhett N. Cochran Fire Safety During the Holidays

With the holiday season barreling down upon us, it occurred to me that this would be a perfect time to bring up fire safety. While residential fires increase steadily as the temperature falls, the three-day period of December 24-26 is a particularly dangerous period from a home fire standpoint. According to the United States Fire Administration fire deaths, injuries, and dollar loss increase an average of 50%, 61%, and 43%, respectively. But… Continue

Rhett N. Cochran Making the Monon Trail Safe

As printed in the September 16, 2008 Metro+State section of The Indianapolis Star, a colleague and I were hired by the City to repair the damaged Code Blue Emergency Call Boxes on the Monon Trail. In the wake of recent violence and the subsequent bad press, the Indy Parks Gre… Continue

Kelly J. Jeffrey Indiana BMV

Although I've been in Indiana for a little over a year, I just recently went in to get my license. I know, I know. It's just that I lived in 3 different places throughout my year here, and was waiting for my boyfriend and I to get our house before going to the big, bad BMV. That was a month or so ago, and then I realized my social security card has been lost in my five recent moves, so that took time as well. One week ago I went in to get my license. As an out-of-stater, I had to surrender my o… Continue

Patric Welch Stop rebooting my computer Microsoft!

I don't really have anything against Microsoft but lately the company is starting to get on my nerves. Specifically when it comes to rebooting my computer automatically in the middle of the night. These reboots stem from the automated updates that download to my PC in the middle of the night. The updates are usually related to patches issued by Microsoft to address recent security threats. I'm all for that. But I'm not all for the reboots. I'm not for them because… Continue
