Functionality is the key word when purchasing furniture. When choosing one piece or an entire floor of tables, desks, chairs, etc. it’s important to consider what function each will serve.
If you have a waiting area that is rarely used (because your staff is so efficient), you would not need chairs that come with a 10-year guarantee, for example. Tables that hold just a couple magazines do not need to meet a weight requirement. On the other hand, if you place all of your awards and trophies in…

Here's a question I received from one of my readers. I thought everyone could benefit from my reply so I'm including the full question and answer below.
Q: When I tried to open a Word document attachment, a pop up said it was created from a newer version of Microsoft Word and that I needed to install a compatibility pack.
When I clicked through to see what was involved to do that, it came up that it would be a big deal with a number of preliminary steps so I decided it wasn't worth the eff…

Remember
Jill* from my office? The one who is both clueless and brilliant at the same time?
Well, yesterday morning, Jill was looking for me. I was at an offsite meeting from 8am to noon. I had the meeting scheduled on my electronic calendar, which is accessible by everyone in the office. Because of the nature of the meeting (we were running a focus group), I had my cell phone (…

At the tender age of 50+ I find I am making more discoveries now than in most other times of my life. I don't know if it is because I am treading new water, or if I just have the time to savor the discoveries. For whatever reason, each discovery is as surprising as feeling the soft velvet-ness of a stingray. This week the discovery I am relishing is that of working from home.
Until this last week I was viewing it more as a prison of isolation, I was constantly yearning for contact from the outs…

Thanks to the guy at the bank I discovered that my driver's license expired today. Normally, I don't like to spend my Saturday mornings at the BMV. That's second only to being in Wal Mart on Dec. 26. For the most part I'm able to take care of all my renewals online and avoid going inside the branch.
I wasn't going to have any better day to do it, and I couldn't upload my favorite avatar online for my license picture,so I decided to head on down to my local branch (Michigan Rd in NW Indy). As I…

I've been both complimentary and critical of
ChaCha service in the past, but today I think ChaCha really blew a chance to make a good first impression with one of my clients.
I was teaching my client how to use the 2003 version of
Microsoft Excel which led into a discussion of whether or not my client should upgrade to the newer 2007 version of…

The Internet was buzzing today with talk about which Super Bowl commercials were the best and which were the funniest. While I have my own opinion on that (Dorito's crystal ball), this blog post is about what I thought was the funniest thing that aired after the Super Bowl.
NBC aired a special one hour edition of The Office immediately following its Super Bowl coverage. On the show, office manager Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, determined that people in the office were stressed and that…

Be honest with yourself.
When we are working with home sellers we can and need to disclose, by State and Federal Law, certain information about our sellers. How many times have you gone a step above and disclosed more then you really should?
Then have you ever thought off who you give any of this information to?
I don’t mean to outside agents that are showing the home and bring offers. This ruling includes to your internal staff as well. Did you realize that when you discloser any vital infor…

I have always been frustrated by Microsoft, because I always felt that I had no other choice unless I wanted to go to a MAC and so far I have not done that (getting closer). About a year ago I bought a new laptop and opted not to put MSOffice on it. Instead I put OpenOffice on it. http://www.openoffice.org/index.html
I have never been more pleased. It is a great program, it has all of the features of Office, the Word Processor works just like Word with a bonus, I can save all my documents as a…

When it came to choosing a location for our office it didn't take long to choose downtown at Michigan and Pennsylvania Streets. Not only do we have an incredible view of the Indiana War Memorial Plaza, University Park, and American Legion Mall we have very low rent.
A short walk brings us to the new Marion County Public Library, the Elbow Room (fantastic place for lunch an…

Thanks to all for the e-mails, notes and phone calls of congratulations regarding Lifeline's new data center and office facility in the former Eastgate mall. We've received national press coverage in IT and real estate publications. Interest is high.
Work progresses well as we have removed about 10 40-ton dumpsters of trash with another 20 or so dumpsters to go. Job one is converting the old Burlington Coat Factory into hardened computer room facilities. We will have that data center space avai…

Do you ever go through a day with a vague sense you're actually living some other day?
Today is Tuesday, for example, but it feels like Monday.
Is there a name for this phenomenon? If there isn't, there should be because this happens to me often enough. Like Deja Vu, or something...
Anyway...since today is the day we're living (regardless of what the calendar says) I will take this opportunity to introduce Smaller Indiana's first official sponsor, the I…
