So, if you follow my Twitter, you know that this has been a pretty awful day for my big brother.
He and his new wife, Gretchen, recently moved 8 hours from the rest of our family so he can attend Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in South Bend. This weekend, we all came out to my grandparents' house near Milan, Indiana to celebrate Christmas. Like we have every year since... well, before I existed.
This morning is when they got the call.… Continue

If you pay attention to the local or national news today (radio, TV, internet or newspaper) you will undoubtedly see a story about the health care debate.
The reason this has become such big news is that for the first time in a long time the average intellectually lazy American (which is about 95% of the country) is beginning to pay attention to what is going on in the US politically.
Unfortunately, I still think that most are still just paying attention to the sound bites. We hear that “46 mi… Continue
I'd like to get some contacts to some local t-shirt vendors. Am looking into makinge some 50+ T-shirts of various sizes for one of our local events later this summer and hoping to get some idea of what it would cost for something like that.
thanks very much

This is a headline I want to see. If they haven't been making a profit for years anyway, why not? Let all the funds support the Pacer Academy or something similar.
The Pacers continue to make their case for a bailout of sorts. Unfortunately they are not making their case to the taxpayer, just the decision makers. If taxpayers won't make a donation or buy tickets as a show of support it seems a bit nefarious to tax them.
Local politicians beware. Voters remember. Continue

Took a snow day today. I haven't gone outside since I dug out the car for Sandy. I didn't see the point of driving across town to sit in the shop by myself. I am sure there are some hearty souls who thought it was a good day to hang out at the local coffee shop, but I think it safer for me and my barista to stay home.
I am offering a dollar off of a 12 or 16 ounce bag of coffee tomorrow and Friday to make up for being closed. So, I will extend that to all of you SI folks as well.

Over Christmas I stopped at America's Country Side Farmer's Market and picked up "Hot Onion Relish with Jalepenos" from an Amish Organic food purveyor "Dutch Country Market". Oh what to do with this treat! Organic, all natural ingredients and jarred so it would keep until I figured it out. I've never used this ingredient.
So here are two of my inventions and you can add or take away at will, I'm a cook, not a baker, so everything is a pinc… Continue

Here I sit listening to the roaster hum, and Sandy curse the flame for going out.
She roasted last week and yesterday after we closed. We tasted some Colombia that she roasted yesterday. It was a little too fruity for her tastes, but I thought it was ok. I would like to see a bit more caramel in the flavor. It did go a tad sour once cooled.
Flame didn't go out yesterday, so she thought it was perhaps some moisture in the drum. Wonder why it is doing this today?
Well today she roasted some mor… Continue
Ruth Holladay's blog says Gannett is dismantling Indy.com. The former INTake paper and website will get its web content from national restaurant and calendar provider Metromix. Because no one knows Indianapolis better than a web company in Chicago.

I am one who has been called out by Pat for being too self-promotional. Pat's right. I've got lot's of other outlets and I get that he's trying to make SI something different.
So from now on, I'm only going to blog here on Environmental issues that occupy my thinking.
Starting with something that really kind of freaked me out in the Star this Sunday. Anyone else read the article about the new Marriott? Great project and I'm of course all for development here in Indianapolis that drives the wel… Continue
Consider the following Dessert... Chipotle Chocolate Cake, Avocado Iced Cream, Creme Fraiche Adobo Sauce. At first glance what seems like an appetizer at Jose Frogs turns out to be the best of what a locally contrived dessert can be; at once adventurous and familiar. You 'trust' that the chef has at least tried this concoction and that it would not be TOO anything. Too sweet, too hot, too contrasting; and your faith is well founded.
What comes to the table could be mint ice cream on regular cho… Continue
Yesterday kicked off Going Local week -- a chance to celebrate local food. The challenge? Eat something local every day. Go to a farmer's market or U-pick farm or orchard. Visit a store or restaurant that uses and celebrates local food. Read a book on food. Or better, arrange to attend one of the upcoming Farm-to-Table dinners from Slow Food Indy raising money for our 14 Terra Madre delegates. The brainchild of blogger Victoria Wesseler and her… Continue

If you prefer to eat at independent restaurants over chains and shop at farmers markets instead of chain groceries, you can claim to be part of an official movement starting on Aug. 31. Sunday is the start of "Going Local Week," a grassroots (natch) event celebrating local food production that runs through Sept. 6.
The core activity for Going Local Week is to promote “the eating of Indiana locally grown and produced foods as the norm, not a novelty,” according to the event Web site. That means… Continue
