This blog was originally posted on Building a Better Indiana. Business owners in Vancouver, Washington might think so. Governing’s Alan Ehrenhalt has penned an interesting piece about how the city has used two-way streets to revitalize its downtown area. While many cities, incl… Continue

Paul Lushin Mother Made Me Do It

I recently had a meeting with Sharp Business Systems here in Indianapolis. First, I have to say that it was a refreshing business meeting unlike some I have attended, but before the meeting ever started, I saw a “Guiding Principles” statement hanging on a wall. What struck me was the second point which said “We operate our business in a manner that would make our parents proud.” That was an interesting projections… Continue

Marita Topmiller NAR - Pending Home Sales Index posted 8th Consecutive Monthly Gain in September

As reported by the National Association of Realtors®, the Pending Home Sales Index posted its 8th consecutive monthly gain in September. It’s the longest winning streak in the history of the index and Pending Home Sales are now at their highest levels since December 2006. Marita Topmiller New Tax Rebate for HomeBuyers - Not Just for First Time Buyers Anymore

First time home buyer tax credit gets unanimous Senate approval A measure to extend and expand the first-time home buyer tax credit won unanimous Senate approval Wednesday on a 98-0 vote, and House passage would send it to President Barack Obama for his signature into law. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, said the chamber may act on it Thursday. If passed into law, the new tax credit would extend the existing credit for first-time homebuyers, worth up to $8… Continue

Michael Reynolds How design affects credibility on the web

I hate ugly websites. I realize that I have a particular bias as a result of what I do so I'm sure that is to be expected. In fact, people often have fun with me by sending me links to ugly websites just to see how much I cringe. All fun aside, however, how often do we really think about how design affects our credibility as businesses? Do ugly websites hurt business? Turns out, the answer is yes. Many studies have been done on this topic, including… Continue

Aaron Prickel Trick or Treat Prospecting

I learned a valuable lesson this weekend when trick-or-treating with my 2.5 year old son. As we were putting his costume on I was explaining to him how we were going to go from door to door and say “trick or treat” and then he would get candy from the person at the door. My wife stayed at the house so she could pass out the candy and stay with our newborn. She frantically took pictures as we bolted out the door heading down the sidewalk in our neighborhood. The first few houses all had their li… Continue

Carey Driscoll Indiana Ballet Company's Phantom of the Opera

I was lucky enough to score two free tickets to the Phantom of the Opera performed by the Indiana Ballet Company, thanks to Smaller Indiana. My husband Dan and I went last night to the show and were very impressed. I hadn't been to a ballet in several years, and the Phantom of the Opera is one of Dan's favorite narratives. It was also the first time either of us had been to the Madame Walker Theatre - what a beautiful venue (have you seen the funky monkeys above the stage!?). The performance was… Continue

Paul Lushin Ceiling of Complexity

Who invented the horseless carriage aka, the car? Some might say it was Henry Ford while others know better. Henry Ford didn’t invent the car, but rather the assembly line process. Elwood H Haynes from Kokomo, Indiana was the first to invent a horseless carriage using an internal combustion engine. Currently, his automobile is on display at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Think about whom of these two gentlemen have household names? It’s not Elwood Haynes. Did you also know that Central Indian… Continue

Michael Reynolds How an insurance agency generates business using Facebook

I always enjoy hearing stories of small business owners using social media to generate leads and connect with new clients. As much as I encourage people to give social media a chance, it's the real-world case studies that speak the loudest. Jim DeWitt is an owner at DeWitt Insurance Group and is a member of my BNI chapter. Jim's agency offers life and health insuranc… Continue

Jon D. Speer Is There A Strategy for Indiana?

Just curious if you have come across a strategy for Indiana or even Indianapolis? If so, please share it. I've been toying with the idea of developing a strategy for Indiana regarding the life sciences industry. I don't completely like this concept because focusing solely on life sciences is not holistic. But it's what I know. So I thought I would get input from Smaller Indiana. You know other stuff and can help contribute to developing an Indiana (or maybe just Indy) strategy. It might be eas… Continue

Paul Lushin Creating Win-Win Situations

Do you remember the first time you tried to convince your parents to say yes? Maybe you were asked by a friend to sleep over, or wanted that new red bike for your birthday. Immediately, you may have thought to yourself, what can I say to convince my parents to say yes? You began an internal search for ways to make the situation a win-win for both of you. When you approached them, you listed reasons why it would be a favorable decision. You made endless promises to be on best behavior. As you con… Continue

Joe Shoemaker GETTING YOUR HOUSE READY FOR WINTER

Winter's almost here, so it's time to be thinking about settling into your home and bracing for the cold rain and snow.

Just a few tips that might help out a bit:

1. Hire a Licensed Home Inspector to do a full inspection. Putting a fresh set of eyes on your place - not to mention taking a look at the places you'll never go (crawl space, attic, etc.) - will give you a measure of confidence t
