Bill Bean Social Media Divides

Offline social networks are affected by race and socio-economic status. Why would social media networks be any different than "real world" networks? (Need a better descriptor than "real world") "I have friends who are white," says 19-year-old Diego Luna. "They are my white people friends and they are mostly on Facebook. That's why I use Facebook. My brown people are on MySpace." Diego Luna,19, in an NPR interview. Facebook, MySpace Divide Along Social Lines was… Continue

Greg Phelps Protesting a school

This week Carly’s high school is being picked by the members of a church because of a play they are staging. I’ll let you digest that one for a minute…a school of kids…will be picketed …by adults from a “faith” based organization. I’m all about faith. I should get that out in the open right now. I believe in the golden rule. I teach my kids to live with love and treat people they way they wish to be treated. Ask and ye shall receive – we live it, practice it, believe it. This group has a bee in… Continue

Faith Wesstrom Flooded backgarden with today's rains

In about a year apart, our backgarden experienced its second flooding. Happened to look out to the garden below and saw the big pool of water where the creek had now turned into a small raging river. Last year around June we had our very first flooded backyard and at that time, the water level was much higher and totally submerged the garden where one can't see the fences or the door into the garden. We heard alot of sad stories about the floods last year and I can't help but worry that what dam… Continue

Ed Turi The Dangers of Being Addicted to Email

I am addicted to email. I check it constantly. If I'm not at my computer I check it on my phone while I'm driving, coaching my sons soccer game, talking to my wife or kids, and even doing yard work. About the only time I don't check it is when I'm in a meeting with someone or sleeping. Recently I read a great book called "The Power of Full Engagement." It is written by two sports psychologists who teach executives how to perform at a higher level. They focus on helping people improve their perfo… Continue

Karen received an email from a networking group of hers inviting her to plan an event at Morty's Comedy Joint. She contacted me thinking that doing something at Morty's would be perfect for my group, Make me laugh - Show meContinue

Bob Sullivan Where's the Rebel Yell?

I’m officially an outraged, out-of-touch parent. As Dad to two soon-to-be-tween girls, I’ve uttered the usual and absolutely expected cry all parents have screamed at their kids ever since Elvis first shook his pelvis. I’m disgusted at the appalling music of the current generation. And I’ll tell you one thing–say it with me–they’re not playing that crap in MY house. I’m talking about High School Musical and its plethora of highly offensive videos and soundtracks. Yes, offensive. Offensively in… Continue

Matt Breeden Update: Logan Young's Discrimination Claim Against IHSAA

From Matt Breeden's SportsLawGuru.com

Back in November I wrote about a column about Logan Young, a freshman at Bloomington South High School in Indiana, who was denied the right to play baseball, because she was a girl and softball was offered as an alternative. Logan sued the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) based on a 14th Amendment discrimination theory, as well as Title IX.

Patric Welch No middle ground when it comes to high definition channels

Noobie recently ran a poll on its web site asking how important the number of available high definition channels is when choosing between over-the-air, cable or satellite programming. The results were definitely interesting. The majority, roughly 39% of respondents, said that the number of high definition channels was not at all important. The second highest group of voters, 27% of respondents, said that the number of high definition channels was extremely important. The remaining 34% were spli… Continue

Deb New Keeping it in-person while online

The online world provides for a lot of great connections. I've met cool new business people I probably never would have met in the "real" world like Kyle Lacy, reconnected with long, lost ones like college classmates, and found new ways to connect through Kelley InCircle and Smaller Indiana. There's a ton of amazing and free information like… Continue

Patric Welch CBS delivers a high demand show in a low definition format

I've seen dozens of reality shows over the past decade. Most of them never really stuck with me, but a few of them caught my fancy. One such reality show that I never miss is the Amazing Race. I was especially excited when this season's Amazing Race kicked off because I could finally watch it in high definition. Unfortunately, CBS, apparently didn't share my enthusiasm. When I started watching the first episode, I thought something was wrong with my television. "Why are there black bars on the… Continue

Stephen Edds Congress Suspends Rules to Defeat Oil Speculation Bill

In another move that suprised absolutely no one, the House of "Representatives" today voted down H.R. 6604, the House version of the energy speculation bill, by a vote of 276-151. Wait, you ask, how do you lose a vote with more people voting 'yea' than 'no'? Those sneaky foxes brought the bill to the floor under "suspension of the rules," which changes the requirements to now force a bill to have a 2/3 vote to pass. Why use the suspension procedure for a bill that has 276 votes but not 290 (2/3… Continue

Lorraine Ball We are a Tech Mecca

In the early days of Smaller Indiana, there was a lively discussion about about whether or not, Indianapolis should strive to be the next Silicon Valley. Six pages of posts later, we had opinions on all sides of the fence. But a recent email from Techpoint, convinced me those of us who believed it would be possible, were right… Continue

Patric Welch CompUSA exemplifies why I feel sorry for consumers

Recently, I wrote a post saying how sorry I felt for consumers who might be snapping up so-called good deals on HD DVD players. Since that time the high definition DVD format war has come to an end. Blu-Ray has won. For at least 24 hours I felt better knowing that the news of Blu-Ray's victory would disseminate quickly. Until I received this email from CompUSA:… Continue

Patric Welch What ever happened to free color television?

Technology is a funny thing. One day a new technology is living on the bleeding edge and another it's old hat. I think of this whenever I drive by an old-fashioned motel. Many moons ago, motels would boast on a big sign outside of the motel that they offer free color television. Now you would laugh if the person behind the counter told you color television was included in your night's stay. more Continue
