John Essex II Going full-time into my own business EssexArt ABC, LLC

Since recently retiring from my 33 year career as an art teacher, I have started putting together something I have been planning on doing for some time. Though working part-time as a freelancing artist, bagpiper and caricaturist for years, I looked forward to the day I could delve full-time into those activities that I enjoy so much. Well, that time is now here and things are beginning to take shape. After taking a few workshops from the Business Ownership Initiative (BOI), I had a much better… Continue

Kelli B Schmith Self-Employed: Ready or Not?

At last, the self-employed worker goes mainstream. It’s too soon to look fondly at the recession and give it credit for accelerating the process, but give it time. Until then, let go of the resentment and put your skills to work. The freelance life is exhilarating, thrilling, and stimulating. It can also be frustrating, maddening, lonely, and shocking (at tax time). If self-employment is new to you, take a deep breath and shore up your resources (in this case, information and people). I've post… Continue

Susan Baroncini-Moe Starting A Business in A Challenging Economic Climate, Part One (Why Now?)

My recent LifeHack.org post, published April 10:

Starting a business during a recession seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? If the economy isn’t doing well and people aren’t spending money, doesn’t that mean a new business is likely to fail? Actually, the answer may surprise you. Fear… Continue

Susan Baroncini-Moe A Follow-Up To “Change The Way You See Work and Change Your Life”

From my LifeHack.org column, published today: I’ve received so many e-mails and comments about my “Change The Way You See Work and Change Your Life” article that I decided to write a follow-up article to talk more about the specifics of what some call “non-traditional work” but w… Continue

Stephen Edds I'm back

I had to take a break from Smaller Indiana to evaluate its' worth in light of recent events. I have a new book out, "Crazyman's Economics" and have spent the past month working on implementing the marketing plan for the book, which initially included SI. But after my announcement was axed, I had to re-examine the time spent on SI. I still can't figure out… Continue

Stephen Edds First blog...so, how does it end?

I'm a writer, social commentator, humorous agitator, pop-culture disposal, gossip whore, and all-around poster-child of "know a little about a lot of stuff." Now, obviously, there are drawbacks to this. If someone asks me what I'm passionate about, outside my family, the answer of "um, I don't really know" doesn't really seem to inspire the masses. I mean, since this is April 4, I'll invoke the spirit of MLK (since it's the cool thing to do) and say that if I were to say "I have a dream..." and… Continue
