For most businesses, a web site is one of the most important investments you can make. Entrepreneurs are either overspending or underspending on their web sites, and many have no idea what they’re doing or why. So today I’m going to talk about why a good, solid web site really matters to your business, and in the next three weeks, I’ll follow up with articles on the core components your web site needs to work well for you, and how to hire a solid web firm to build your site affordably.
1. Yo…

My recent LifeHack.org post, published April 10:

Starting a business during a recession seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? If the economy isn’t doing well and people aren’t spending money, doesn’t that mean a new business is likely to fail? Actually, the answer may surprise you.
Fear…

My latest post on LifeHack.org, published March 26, 2009:

How often do you get that lazy feeling? You know the one. It’s that heavy feeling that weighs down your entire body so the only things you really feel like doing is watching TV, surfing the Internet, or playing your Wii. Or,…

Maybe you’ve been trying to kick-start your business and it just hasn’t worked yet. Maybe you’ve just started but you’re already frustrated. Or maybe you’ve wanted to hit that next level for years and haven’t been able t…

One of the most important steps (if not the most important one) you can take when starting a business is to talk with your partner/spouse before you embark on your adventure. It’s absolutely crucial to have your partner with you on the same page when you start a business. Without thei…

I've been a freelance software developers for 2.5 years. When I started out on my own in 2006, I set a three phased approach:
1. Subcontracted software development - I would work for consulting companies (as I had for the previous 7 or so years) as a subcontractor on-site for clients.
2. Freelance Software Development - build a base of clients and develop projects for them. This would be done off-site from the client so I could maintain better use of my time and eliminate commuting.
3. Independ…

Fear or bravery?
Doomsday or opportunity?
Everywhere I seem to turn there’s bad news — layoffs, bankruptcys, financial disaster. And, when times get tough, organizations seem to cut and stop doing things important to their business or organizational success. Cut people, cut programs, cut budgets, cut services, cut communications and marketing. Been there. Done that. Doesn’t really see that it works so well. Consider that we all get to think more creatively. Creativity has always made the world g…

From my LifeHack.org column, published today:
I’ve received so many e-mails and comments about my “Change The Way You See Work and Change Your Life” article that I decided to write a follow-up article to talk more about the specifics of what some call “non-traditional work” but w…

From my Stepcase LifeHack.org article, posted today:
When was the last time you took a risk? Not something major and life-threatening, but something that represented a step outside your comfort zone. Can you recall a time recently when you did something that felt uncomfortable for you? If not, get ready to take a major step forward.
Frequently, in business and in life, we get t…

I’m almost always thinking about business, so it’s no surprise that when I’m working out at the gym, business is on my mind. Recently, I had a revelation at the gym. I often work out with headphones. I listen to power music and that helps me stay focused and I can endure more than if I don’t have them on. But with those headphones on, I never, ever meet people.
My gym is a social place. And although each gym probably has its own dynamic and subculture, I suspect most gyms are just as friendly.…

I remember a few years ago I engaged a business coach to help me examine the ways I create hurdles or barriers to success. I was only somewhat surprised to hear this highly experienced business consultant say, "Most business owners have a screw loose and are somewhat emotionally unstable." Well, that may not have been his exact words, yet that is how I interpreted his comments.
The overall idea I believe he expressed is that entrepreneurs are not like normal people. (Of course, who know was "no…

I was recently reading Entrepreneur Magazine’s article on hot trends for 2009. Now, I don’t always like Entrepreneur and other small biz magazines because I think sometimes these publications focus on businesses that require substantial startup capital. While there’s an obvious need for brick and mortar businesses, they’re not the first thing on my mind when someone comes to me to start a business, especially in this economy.
That said, I do like the current issue, primarily because of the “hot…

My husband just shared a joke with me and it seemed particularly poignant. Now, I'll warn you that this is kind of a religious joke, but regardless of your particular stance on religion and/or spirituality, the point will still be the same. Here goes:
This man was out to sea when his boat capsized. The boat was destroyed and his crew lost. As the man treaded water, with nothing around him but ocean, he wondered how he would be saved. As a man of faith, he called out to God, "God, please help me…

Last week I heard from a few people who said, “I’d love to go out on my own, start a new business, but I’m waiting until the economy gets better.”
Okay. Fears about the economy are completely understandable. A lot of people are scared right now and it’s not hard to relate. But are you really safer with a big corporation than on your own? Let’s look into that a little:
* Do you know what’s going on with your company?
Are you familiar with the books and do you know how stable the company…

Last night, I spent four hours in a strategic planning session for a non-profit board on which I am chairperson. During the meeting, I was reminded about a few business benefits of participating on a non-profit board. Of course the opportunity to impact the people in my community is never lost on me. From a business perspective, you can learn about best practices for business networking and business development. Additionally, you can learn what not to do in a board meeting for your business.

I just read an article discussing,
GLOBALITY: Competing with Everyone from Everywhere for Everything, a book by Harold L. Sirkin, James W. Hemerling and Arindam K. Disadvantaged. In this book they discuss the nature of a true global economy and how the companies from the emerging markets are competing on a global scale.
This article made me think about the untapped emerging markets in the United States. While we praise the small business owner, we are…

In the early days of Smaller Indiana, there was a

Six pages of posts later, we had opinions on all sides of the fence. But a recent email from
Techpoint, convinced me those of us who believed it would be possible, were right…
