This week Carly’s high school is being picked by the members of a church because of a play they are staging. I’ll let you digest that one for a minute…a school of kids…will be picketed …by adults from a “faith” based organization.
I’m all about faith. I should get that out in the open right now. I believe in the golden rule. I teach my kids to live with love and treat people they way they wish to be treated. Ask and ye shall receive – we live it, practice it, believe it.
This group has a bee in…

I was at an Indiana Pacer Game with a friend back in the nineties. They asked everyone to rise for the National Anthem. A young kid with leg braces and crutches shuffled out onto the court to sing. He had the confidence of a pro. He belted out that song with such emotion and power that it made me cry. Women are great with crying. If a Hallmark ad hit’s them the right way – BAM – tears. I can count on one hand the number of times tears came to my eyes in the last decade and still have fingers to…

"Laughter is the first form of communication between mothers and babies and is an important form of bonding," says psychologist Provine, who sees laughter as social glue."

Do well by yourself and get an advanced ticket to see one of the final shows of
Phil The Void: The Great Brain Robbery. Phil Van Hest’s standup comic/philosophic/political act will kickstart your brain, make you laugh, make you flush in embarrassed self-recognition, and make you share some of his palpable anger and disappointment with the unsatisfactory status quo of our common political and in…

I ate Lindsey Fisher's cookie.
The cookie in question, before your mind starts wandering, was a prop for a sketch she performed as part of the sketch comedy troupe, The Cool Table, at their fourth appearance at the Indy Fringe Theatre Festival. More on that later.
The Chicago-based troupe performs original sketches during each performance without repeating any during their entire Fringe appearance. What I saw tonight was not what they performed either of the last two nights.
I had the chance…

SheliaB (a member of IndianaAuditions.com) posted a review of our current IndyFringe show
Welcome to Blanksville: An Improvised Tribute to Choose Your Own Adventure. Here's what she had to say:
This is improvisation at its best. At the Phoenix Theater you choose your own adventure. Each show is different. Get there early so you can put suggestions for things to use during the show on little slips o…

Our first review has come in from
WIBC!
Here's what they had to say!
I must forewarn you, my review is going to be fairly useless when it comes to this show. INDYPROV’s Welcome to Blanksville: An Improvised Tribute to Choose Your Own Adventure is exactly that; a choose your own adventure improvisational comedy show. As such, every show is different; so different in fact that even the cast cha…

I need 300 people to help make a fundraiser that I am putting together for my local high school band students a great success!
I am putting together a fundraiser at Morty's Comedy Joint on Thursday Night. I would like for you all to join Karen Wolfley, Margaret Medley, myself and others for a great comedy show starring Jamie Lissow.
What a great opportunity to
network, get a great comedy show and support this cause all at the same time. I am raising money for children at a local (Indian…

Recently I met Karen Wolfley and Margaret Medley here at Smaller Indiana. They are two great people!
We put our heads together and have come up with some things.
Here's how it went. Karen received an email from a networking group of hers inviting her to plan an event at
Morty's Comedy Joint. She contacted me thinking that doing something at Morty's would be perfect for my group,
Make me laugh - Show me…

I know this is, like, so last week, but Jon Stewart's face off with "Mad Money"'s Jim Cramer was of particular interest to me. For days Stewart took Cramer and CNBC to task over what he perceived to be media malfeasance, pumping up a market that was build on little more than pixie dust and gypsy tears. I recently finished reading "Amusing Ourselves to Death," Neil Postman's polemic on the death of typographic culture and the silliness of television culture, and one of his final points resonated…

An audience that is primed and ready for the show. An audience that freely laughs, applauds and participates with the show is like crack to an actor, and I gladly admit to my addiction to it. Especially in musical theatre comedy, there is nothing that fixes and actors graving like a hot aud…

Sitting in the restaurant waiting for your date, he's late, do you leave or do you keep waiting. Suddenly he rushes to your table with a 100 excuses. Oh we have all experienced the "Adventures in Mating" some of us more recently than others.
Miranda is looking for a mate, and she i…

At the Indy Fringe, we have plenty of solo performances, but only a couple of ensemble sketch performers. I had a chance to catch Chicago's The Cool Table, one of the funniest sketch comedy troupes in the country (and they can prove it!).

EDITORIAL from Jan 2007
Because of my obvious girth, it will be difficult to convince the reader that I have no bias in this upcoming editorial. I assure you, this is an editorial with a well-thought out conclusion. Ow! I think I bit my tongue!
The “trans-fat” ban of 2008 is looming large on the consciousness of the American who enjoys food. Stop. I know it only affects New York, but really. Do you expect me to believe that we won’t soon follow the footsteps of the mother government in o…

Ed. Note: This is an article I wrote in 2006 for the Hendricks County Business Leader.
Handshakes are a common occurrence and we only think about it when we get an unusual one. No other custom is as damaging as an unusual handshake. It can be the difference between closing the deal or not. Your placement in the hierarchy of competency is all placed in that initial impression. I don’t mean to make you nervous, but your livelihood depends on pressing the flesh.
Last week, I awkward…
