CJ McClanahan "Christmas"

It happened again. Despite many good intentions, preplanning and 20 + years of experience I have once again left my Christmas shopping to the very last minute. Now, I have the pleasure of spending December 24th with millions of other people (97.7% men) who have done the same thing. At some point, I will argue that Christmas shouldn’t be just about presents and that my annual procrastination is a meaningful protest against the commercialization of the holiday. For the purpose of this message,… Continue

Leah Barr We interrupt your regularly scheduled blog post to ask for a Christmas miracle.

So, if you follow my Twitter, you know that this has been a pretty awful day for my big brother. He and his new wife, Gretchen, recently moved 8 hours from the rest of our family so he can attend Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in South Bend. This weekend, we all came out to my grandparents' house near Milan, Indiana to celebrate Christmas. Like we have every year since... well, before I existed. This morning is when they got the call.… Continue

Carey Driscoll Indiana Ballet Company's Phantom of the Opera

I was lucky enough to score two free tickets to the Phantom of the Opera performed by the Indiana Ballet Company, thanks to Smaller Indiana. My husband Dan and I went last night to the show and were very impressed. I hadn't been to a ballet in several years, and the Phantom of the Opera is one of Dan's favorite narratives. It was also the first time either of us had been to the Madame Walker Theatre - what a beautiful venue (have you seen the funky monkeys above the stage!?). The performance was… Continue

Raquel Richardson What color is Christmas?

What colors do you associate with Chistmas? I pretty much don't associate Christmas with reds and greens unless they are off hues that are brighter and much more fun than the 'typical' holiday offerings. I also prefer thinking of silver or copper instead of brass or gold. A modern Christmas… Continue

Erik Deckers I Don't Believe in the Little Drummer Boy

I Don't Believe in the Little Drummer Boy Erik Deckers Laughing Stalk Syndicate Copyright 2008 Christmas is a time of traditions. One of Erik's Christmas traditions is to reprint the Little Drummer Boy column because he's usually on the couch, sleeping off too much egg nog again. Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. My birthday, my anniversary, and any other time people give me presents are also big favorites. To get myself into the Christmas spirit, I like to listen to Christma… Continue

Mike Magan My First Santa Gig

I've never run into a bathroom more excited. I locked the door behind me, hung the suit on the hook and just stared at it. A plush red jacket with snowball-like trim, a wildly curly beard, and roomy read velvet pants. I wasn't just looking over a Christmas outfit, I was about to transform myself into a rockstar: the one and only Santa Claus. Now before you think my first Santa appearance was going to my head, I had plenty of stage fright. I was going to walk into a cafeteria just down the ha… Continue

Laura Frank Indiana's Own Christmas Story

Every year I look forward to so many Christmas rituals. But what I really love about Christmas is the ubiquitous holiday movie…A Christmas Story. Ah, how I absorb myself in the trials and tribulations of young Ralphie, whose only necessity in this world is the Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle BB gun with a compass in the stock. A boy, whose frazzled mother refuses to buy him the BB gun because “…you’ll shoot your eye out” but forces him to model pink bunny pajamas.… Continue

Cindy Hartman Don't put your boxes by the curb

Drive through any neighborhood on ‘trash day’ following the holiday, and you’ll see empty boxes upon empty boxes showing what a wonderful Christmas everyone had. Even though the economy is slow this year, you’ll see that plenty of people received new desktop computers and printers, laptops, televisions, appliances, and more. A box showing a picture of a jewelry armoire will state something quite loudly: there is a lot of jewelry in this house! What a perfect opportunity for burglars to decide wh… Continue

Patric Welch This techie wants more than his two front teeth for Christmas

I thought it would be fun to put together a list of the top 10 technology gadgets I would like for Christmas. When viewing this list, keep a couple of things in mind. For starters, I already have a bunch of cool technology gadgets like TiVo and a Flip video camera so this list isn't necessarily what I think are the top 10 technology gifts this holiday season. Rather, it's a list of the gadgets I would like to have that I don't already have. Also, I'm not really this material of a person or at l… Continue

Hazel "The Queen" Walker Man Trampled to Death at WALMART

A male worker at a New York Wal-Mart was killed Friday when anxious shoppers trampled him in their rush for Black Friday bargains, witnesses say. Witnesses to the early morning incident in Valley Stream, N.Y., said the unidentified worker had been attempting to hold back a wave of customers after the store opened, only to be knocked down and trampled underfoot, the New York Daily News said. "He was bum-rushed by 200 people," Jimmy Overby, a co-worker of the man's, said. "They took the doorsContinue

Milo Curtis The Size of the Box Says how Much You Matter

There was a time in my life when I measured people's appreciation by what they got me at Christmas. Did they get me something on my list (ironically compiled the day of Thanksgiving)? If not, does this gift signify a keen insight into what I want even though it wasn't on the list? Silly? Yes. Superficial? Absolutely! Every Christmas people exchange gifts to show their appreciation, love, and feelings for one another. It's a way of saying, "You matter to me" or "don't matter to me" depending on… Continue

Erik Deckers How the Lawyers Stole Christmas

The city of Louisville was really quite lucky They are the best town in all of Kentucky. They have city pride, and a great big horse race And a warm friendly feeling, like a hearty embrace. Their mayor had a plan that he liked a lot But some lawyers out west, oh no, they did NOT! They tried to wreck Louisville's whole Christmas season You don’t need to ask why, we all know the reason. They may just be lawyers tr… Continue

Erik Deckers ‘Twas the Month Before Christmas

It’s just not the holidays unless Erik’s whining about the commercialization of Christmas. So we’re continuing the Laughing Stalk tradition, and reprinting the reader favorite “Month Before Christmas.” 'Twas the month before Christmas, and all through the town Halloween decorations were just coming down. I went to the mall for a weekend reprieve And saw such a sight that I could not believe. The place had gone crazy, the mall was just packed. With new clothes and new toys and cheap plastic sa… Continue

Mike Magan I want a Santa Gig, how can I find one?

My grandfather used to play an awesome Santa. And until I was eight or nine, he had me fooled. On Christmas Eve night, my family woud usually gather at my grandparents house for dinner. Then, about the time turning up my nose at Cranberry Sauce, the massive brass knocker on the front door would slam against the matching brass plate. BANG, BANG, BANG! My dad would jump up from the table and wonder aloud "who would be visiting us at this hour, on this day?" As he opened the door, there he was- the… Continue

Patric Welch Christmas comes early with Straight No Chaser and Amazon MP3 downloads

A good friend of mine, Jason Bean, recently wrote a blog post titled Straight No Chaser Delivers the "Holiday Spirits" which caught my attention. Straight No Chaser is a local [Indianapolis] 10-man vocal group that got its big break when the Chairman/CEO of Atlantic records just happened upon on of their videos on YouTube. Jason included a link to Straight No Chaser's web site which I visited and instantly fell in love with their music. If you haven't heard this group before, do yourself a favo… Continue

Rhett N. Cochran Fire Safety During the Holidays

With the holiday season barreling down upon us, it occurred to me that this would be a perfect time to bring up fire safety. While residential fires increase steadily as the temperature falls, the three-day period of December 24-26 is a particularly dangerous period from a home fire standpoint. According to the United States Fire Administration fire deaths, injuries, and dollar loss increase an average of 50%, 61%, and 43%, respectively. But… Continue

Jason Bean Support Some IU Alumni That Can Sing!

Now I know there are a number of Indiana University graduates on here and I know you all would probably like to support some alumni that have an amazing story. I had some contacts from Atlanatic Records email me recently to ask if I could help promote one of their new acts on my music blog. It turns out it's a group of guys I saw on YouTube do an entertaining performance of 12 Days of Christmas… Continue

Lori Lowe The Free Christmas Gift Your Spouse Will Treasure

“Whatever I treasure and enjoy—this home, our ranch, the sight of the sea—all would be without meaning if I didn’t have you. I live in a permanent Christmas because God gave me you.”– Ronald Reagan I hear a lot of people talking about needing to scale back this Christmas. From the large crowds in the malls already, I’m not sure they will stick to their goals. What if there was a gift you knew your spouse would really treasure, and it would cost you nothing but your time and effort? The… Continue
