Your Wallet Could Take A Bath With Some Home Repairs

Sunday, February 28, 2010: I had a homeowner last week that attempted to fix his leaking Polished Brass (PB) Delta shower valve. The problem was that he didn't take it apart correctly and nearly ripped the shower valve out of the wall. I had to cut the drywall behind the shower to remove it, but found out that Delta no longer makes the PB finish. Capped off the hot and cold water lines to the shower, turned the water back on to the house and told the homeowner to call me when he finds another… Continue

6th Grade Revisited - The Standardized Test

I am so glad it is ISTEP time, whew; I need a little break from 6th grade. I had to down play my excitement though, because my son is not a happy camper right now. I empathize; I have had many years of the ole standardized testing under my belt. It is not fun! My son and I tried to come up with a top ten list of why these types of tests are so awful…and here it is…drum roll…

Time Management: never lose your socks again

I read this little tidbit the other day and with much enthusiasm shared the wisdom with my wife. It was then I learned I may be the last person on earth to hear of this trick. My guess is there is at least one male out there who has yet

to be enlighted to this empowering technique to reduce stress, save time and

prevent further footwear escapes via the laundry system.

And here it is...after removing your socks, before you drop them from your hand,…

The Dreaded Exam

Week seven delivered a practical exam. Regardless of the fact that I’ve been preparing for this moment for two weeks and was able to sleep in an extra two hours due to the testing format, I was still slightly nervous. Who isn’t? Practical exams can be anxiety-producing nightmares.…

It's week two of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, and I'm giving a second round of Swish-Whack, Take That awards. I created the awards in 2004 to honor America's Mariel Zagunis, who won America's first fencing gold medal in 100 years.

The problem was NBC did such a crappy job of covering Zagunis' historic prize, they only spent 30 seconds… Continue

Networking is Like a Box of Chocolates...

Most people who know me know that I am a networking junkie. I love the energy of events, I love meeting new people, and I love growing my business. I just recently watching Forrest Gump again, and that movie is very endearing – and it has many thought-provoking moments in it that can be applied to so many aspects of our lives.…

Indiana Democrat Starts Facebook Movement to Choose Bayh's Replacement

This blog originally appeared on Building a Better Indiana.

Sen. Evan Bayh’s surprising move last week to announce he was not running for re-election was stunning, even to many most familiar with Indiana politics. However, the timing of said move (just before the candidate filing deadline) struck some the wrong…

Are laptops disposable?

Last week I wrote about a tough decision my client faced between spending money repairing a dying laptop and buying a brand new laptop. I included a voting poll and asked you to vote on which decision you would have made.

Although only 22 people voted, I think a clear majority emerged. 64% of respondents said they would buy a new laptop. This didn't entirely surprise me because it is the same decision my client made.

So it seems that laptops have become disposable. Of… Continue

Official Statement by Brose A. McVey, upon the filing of his candidacy for Congress -- Friday, February 19th, 2010

Today, I am honored to have the opportunity to place my name on the ballot in the 5th Congressional District, where I was born and raised.

I believe with all my heart that our District, our conservative movement, and our country, want –and need -- new energy, new faces, and new ideas. But, more than anything else, they thirst for serious minded public servants, for statesmen, and for results.

I grew up in this District. My mother, my grandparents and…

Foursquare: Check In and Check Out Indy's Hot Spots

Have you heard of Foursquare? Chances are, you've most likely seen it in action on Twitter or Facebook. With all the new social media add-ons and apps, it's tough to decide what is going to be useful and actually fun to use. Foursquare is a location based social networking game where you get points for "checking in" at different spots. I find that most people, including myself, use… Continue

It's Time To Start Caring Again!

I recently sat down with Pat Coyle, the Founder of Smaller Indiana and we had a great discussion about business, life and still making a living while actually giving a crap about our community. We see so many companies, organizations, corporations and individuals who simply take take take. These “takers” have been sucking the life out of communities, small business and people for eons. Today, we…

Suicide Prevention 101

I am a typically chipper lass and don't spend time pondering suicide. However, I am aware of two recent suicides and want to share info that could possibly prevent more.

On Feb. 11, designer Alexander McQueen hanged himself after his beloved mother passed a few days before. Only weeks before that, the grandson of one of my mother's dear friends shot himself in the head. My friend David attended the funerals of two of his friends who had committed suicide, with the deaths being only… Continue

Five hours and counting on the help chat line...UUGGHH!!!

I actually really like chat help for many of the programs I use, but the last 12 hours have been a nightmare. I have been trying to get the Magic Jack, so I can do some work for a client of mine without using my cell phone or work phone for returned phone calls. Now our family has a ban on any product that say “As Seen on TV” because we have probably returned about 10 of these such products as…

My Husband Thinks I Should Connect With the Vacuum Cleaner

So if I understand the practice of Lent correctly (by all means, pipe in if I’m off base here), the idea is to give up something that takes your time/thoughts off God and spend that time you’ve gained in whatever way you connect with Him.

Well, here’s what I experienced last year: I gave up Facebook games. I used to spend hours upon hours playing Facebook games. I would even take time during vacations to update certain games. A really cool thing happened after Lent…

Movie Review - Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

After a summer spent reading the entire series of Harry Potter books, my ten-year old son was at a loss of how to fill the void when he finished them…..until his aunt gave him the first book in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series for his birthday in August. Fueled with a fresh new obsession, Miles tore through all five books in this series without a break. In the books, Percy Jackson is a troubled…
