Ending Extreme Poverty in Congo

Fresh Produce On Its Way To The Market

Fresh produce is a good source of nutrients. Congolese, especially the poor, do not eat a lot of fresh produce. Why? Fresh produce spoil quite fast due to lack of refrigeration. In a country without reliable transportation, it is impossible...

Do You Like Your Neighborhood?

I like my neighborhood. I believe Congolese live their neighborhoods, too. Overall, their neighborhoods are more family-centered. Congolese neighborhoods differ depending on whether you live in an urban or rural area. The differences are similar to our neighborhoods. In rural...

It's What You Don't See In A Congolese Back Yard

How do you unwind after a day's work? Congo's weather is warm year-round even if it occasionally rains sometime. The late afternoons and evenings are great for relaxing and entertaining. It could be a paradise! Where's the lawn chairs, grill,...

What The Congolese Men Do?

That's a question, I am asked a lot by Americans after I tell them about the daily work of Congolese women. So what do they do? Congolese men and boys are the village host. They came out to meet us...

The "Big One" Got Away

Most fishermen, at some point in time, have claimed the "big one" got away. In our rural Congolese village, they have not grown the big one. But they are just starting to raise fish. They are proud of their accomplishments....

Is A Tin Roof The Better Solution?

A tin roof on a mud-walled building is better. But how much better is it over a mud-walled building with a thatched-roof? That's the question, I am asking. What defines better? I am defining better as a long-lasting building. Since...

Children Can Surprise You But They Are Predictable

It was amazing! It all happened in a matter of minutes. What was amazing? The number of children that heard about the candy give-away. Typically, we always take a few bags of candy to pass out to the Congolese children....

Hospitals and Health Clinics Improve the Survival Rates during Childbirth

There are so many things that can go wrong during childbirth. Quite often, it goes wrong for the mother or for the children. And sometimes, it goes bad for both of them. Giving birth in a Congolese hospital or health...

What To Do When The Sun Shines In

When the rain washes the mud from between the sticks, the sun shines in. Also, the rain and wind comes in. The noises distract the students, too. Without the mud between the sticks, the integrity of the building is weaken....

Mixing Dirt and Water Makes Mud for Walls

If you thought making mud was child's play, you are wrong. Mud is used to make walls on Congolese houses. There is no mechanical mixer. It is really done by hand. It is made the same way as you made...

After Lumumba -- The Rest of the Story

After the movie "Lumumba" credits are finished. Here's what you should know.

Col. Joseph MOBUTU seized power and declared himself president in a November 1965 coup. He subsequently changed his name - to MOBUTU Sese Seko - as well as that of the country - to Zaire. Ethnic strife and civil war, touched off by a massive inflow of refugees in 1994 from fighting in Rwanda and Burundi… Continue

Moms' Weekend-Out at Castleton Square Mall

What were these three moms from northern Hamilton County doing at Castleton Square Mall this weekend? They were NOT there to shop. They were NOT worried about the financial crisis. Also, they were NOT worried about their families either. They were actually getting away from it all for the weekend. They were on a different mission.

Linda, Laura, and Rona were busy studying their schedule to make sure they had made no mistakes. However, the stores were not on their schedule. Probably stores were… Continue
