Email Confidentiality Notices Make You Look Stupid

Ok, I've had it. I get lots of email, and a good portion have a so-called "Confidentiality Notice". I'm no lawyer, but I do believe that freedom of speech trumps someone else's paranoia. So I did a little research and found out:
First, email confidentiality notices provide little to nothing in the way of protection and may actually may create a loophole in your non-disclosure agreements if you put them on every email you send. --

My Little Health Care Rant

I'm a little pissed off right now. Our politicians just don't get it. When it comes to healthcare, it's not real complicated. I want:

Security: To be able to get medical care without fear of being bankrupted or losing their life savings.

Stafety: A system that "does no harm."

Freedom: The ability to make choices and select providers.

Obama's plan fails to deliver any of the above. It is overly complex, has too many layers of bureaucracy and would strip control away from consumers in the long… Continue

Is Copyright + Technology Dangerous to Personal Freedom?

Today, Christian Engström had an incredibly thought provoking editorial in The Financial Times. The premise is that we are in grave danger of loosing freedom if copyright is not significantly reformed. My first thought was to dismiss the article as hyperbole, but one line really stood out

The technology could be used to create a Big Brother society beyond our nightmares, where governments and corporations monitor every detail of our lives. In the former East Germany, the gove

Is Antivirus Enough?

Recently one of my kids got nuked by the "Personal Antivirus" malware. It's a sneaky thing that is installed when you view the wrong (and that means a compromised site, not a bad site) website and then tries to scare you into buying a $19.95 subscription for updates. The funny part is that this thing installed itself despite Norton Security suite being up to date and running.

Recently Symantec's DaContinue

Can we break the cycle of tax insanity?

After reading the post on Michael Moore's GM ideas it really hit me how tough it's going to be for our nation to become less wasteful and more efficient. Why? Our government is funded by taxing an ever increasing amount of waste - and if we become more efficient in any way other than producing more stuff to sell, we bankrupt some level of government:

  • Constant redevelopment creates jobs and lower and middle class income tax (the only kind that is really paid) for the federal and state g

thought you would enjoy this:
And lo, in the year 2008, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said:
"Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me."

"Build another Ark and save two of every living thing along with a few good humans."

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying, "You have 6 months to build the ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights."

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard, but there was no ark.

"Noah! I'm about to start the rain! Where is the ark?"

"Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed."

"I needed a building permit."

"I've been arguing with the inspector about the need for a sprinkler system."

"My neighbors claim that I've violated the neighborhood zoning laws by building the ark in my yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision."

"Then the Department of Transportation demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it."

"Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl."

"I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls, but no go!"

"When I started gathering the animals, an animal rights group sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space."

"Then the EPA ruled that I couldn't build the ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood."

"I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew."

"Immigration and Naturalization are checking the green-card status of most of the people who want to work."

"The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with ark-building experience.

"To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species."

"So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark."

Suddenly, the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you're not going to destroy the world?"

"No," said the Lord. "The government beat me to it."

Good questions. My partner is at South By Southwest this week. Have several things going on. I think I talked to Erik about participating on the panel discussion in the morning. Would you like to teach a break out session in the afternoon? On blogging strategies for public relations professionals that they can use for their clients, perhaps? My emai: yourprguy@gmail.com

Hi Mike. I've seen your Professional Blog Services website. Found out about it from Erik Deckers. I'm part of the Continuing Education Academy for the PRSA Hoosier Chapter. In April we're planning a seminar on social media. I'm putting this bug in your ear because we are thinking about having a panel discussion, and we'd like our panel to be one of professionals to educate PR practitioners about social media.
