As a marketer, I preach the importance of being relevant. In order to be relevant, you have to figure out what kinds of things matter to your customers and prospects. I'm not talking about profit and productivity...I'm talking about issues and events and topics that make a person's pulse race. I'm talking about digging deep.

There's no better way to start than by taking your eye off the same old industry rags that pile up in your cubicle. This link will take you to my blog (Dig Deep Thinker) wh… Continue

Self-Employed: Ready or Not?

At last, the self-employed worker goes mainstream. It’s too soon to look fondly at the recession and give it credit for accelerating the process, but give it time. Until then, let go of the resentment and put your skills to work.

The freelance life is exhilarating, thrilling, and stimulating. It can also be frustrating, maddening, lonely, and shocking (at tax time). If self-employment is new to you, take a deep breath and shore up your resources (in this case, information and people). I've post… Continue

"Social Media Made Me Do It" and Other Silly Career Notions

I love a spicy debate over new technology or social trends, and these days it’s impossible to mention Twitter or Facebook without triggering a verbal throw-down.

Once as separate as church and state, technology and social engagement are now inextricably bound together. The whole notion scares the bejeebees out of people. Thanks to the near-mainstreaming of Twitter, Facebook and other community platforms, it’s a cinch to elicit a stream of grunts and eye-rolling from your spouse, colleagues and… Continue

5 Reasons to Follow CFOs on Twitter

Fellow marketers may call it sick, twisted or just slightly left-of-center, but I have a fascination with finance folks and CFOs. Thanks to Twitter and a cool cat named Ken Kaufman, I can now climb right into the left brain of dozens of CFOs. Ken maintains a list of follow-worthy CFOs who are on Twitter, which I've included in my Dig Deep Thinker blog post.

Do you know other social CFOs we should pass along to Ken?

Thanks Kelli,
I'm always excited to hear people like my blog and the content I'm producing. You might be interested in the new podcast I'm about to publish, probably later today. It's about naming your blog, and I take listeners through a five-point branding process to effectively name a corporate blog.
