Joel,

I appreciated our conversation on Chaordic Alliances at the Recreational Music Making event. I look forward to our next conversation and ways we serve the larger community with these ideas.

I figured you didn't often add a voice - I could tell that wasn't your focus from your website. But, yes, I would be interested in talking with you about that if it ever came up again. I do know the standards - it's my favorite stuff to sing, even though I'm classically trained. The only problem might be key... I'm a high soprano, so sometimes the key the standards are played in instrumentally doesn't work for me. I once auditioned to sing with a jazz band, and they loved me, except that most of their stuff required the vocalist to regularly growl out low F's and even E's - not something I can manage. Now, ask me to sing a high D - the really high one - no problem. So, I'd love to do it, if we can jive on range.

Hi Joel, thanks for joining the group! Your ensemble looks great - I'll definitely plan to make it out to one of your public gigs soon. Do you ever add a vocalist to your mix?

What makes something soulful?

I was thinking about soul. what is soul? a jazz or blues musician speaks of certain music as having soul. some music is catergorized as soul music. recently I walked into a room and felt that it had soul. pieces of art can have soul. some people or perhaps most people in certain circumstances are soulful. what is it that makes these things soulful? why do they connect with people at deep levels? Is it the connection to our common humanness? do these art forms and expressions resound in our perso… Continue

Thoughts on community in an i-world

Some thoughts on community and individuality came to me the other day as my family and I were driving in the mini-van. My young children started throwing out song requests for the CD we were listening to... no, not that song, go back to the other song... and it hit me. They are growing up in a digital world. They don't have to wait for a tape to rewind like I did. They get instant song selection. I even remember having a car with only radio. They have a difficult time understanding radio - a med… Continue
