Lucian Lipinsky: Measuring data center energy consumption in watts per logical image

You can't manage what you don't measure." This is especially true when it comes to energy consumption. In automobiles, miles per gallon (MPG) very clearly identifies fuel efficiency. In the data center environment, there are metrics that can be adopted to measure computational power efficiency in a similar way that MPG measures automotive fuel efficiency. The Green Grid has proposed the use of power usage effectiveness (PUE) and data center efficiency (DCE), or data center infrastructure efficiency (DCIE), to measure data center energy efficiency. But concerns about the effectiveness of PUE and DCE as true measures of efficiency highlight the need for a better metric.

PUE is a ratio of the total power a data center facility consumes versus how much of that power is consumed by IT equipment. An average data center should measure 2.0, meaning that only half of all the power consumed is used by non-IT equipment. A data center that measures greater than 2.0 needs to investigate its power inefficiencies. The Environmental Protection Agency recently stated that it will use PUE as an Energy Star rating for data centers. The EPA's endorsement should rapidly expand adoption of PUE.

Is you data center a TIA 942 compliant data center?

Is you data center a TIA 942 compliant data center? TIA 942 was developed by the Telecom Industry Association to define standards for building mission critical facilities like telecommunications hubs and data centers.

TIA 942 is about uptime, maintenance, and scalability in your mission critical facilities.  With the cost of data center downtime rising for most companies, companies that adopt standards like TIA 942 reduce the risks of lost revenue, lost credibility and lost customers.

TIA 942 compliant data centers have the following features:
  • Minimized single points of failure to reduce or eliminate data center downtime
  • Architectural and hardened design considerations
  • Multiple entrances for people, power and telecommunications
  • Cabling system infrastructure for redundancy and scalability
  • Redundant power feeds, generators, UPS systems
  • Scalable, redundant cooling systems
  • Fire suppression standards
  • Security standards

Understanding the value of standards is part of an effective CIO strategy.  Companies that standardize on TIA 942 compliant data centers reduce the risks of data center downtime.

Lawrence Walsh: Managing the Mass of Clouds

Solution providers are getting nervous about their future in a world dominated by cloud computing services that, in many cases, won’t need a middleman. Perhaps the opportunity for solution providers isn’t in selling the cloud, but rather managing the mass of clouds on clients’ behalf.

You can’t open a browser without hitting some report on cloud computing. Every vendor—IBM, Microsoft, Google, HP, Cisco, Dell—either has or is launching a cloud computing initiative, which promises to deliver applications directly to users via the Internet. And that, frankly, has many solution providers nervous.

Chicago colocation needs? Midwest colocation in Indianapolis may be your better choice

If you're looking for outsource data center facilities in Chicago, Chicago colocation may not be your best bet.  SearchData Center.com's Mark Fontecchio writes about The Boyd Company's 2008 data center location evaluation.  Midwest colocation ranked at the top.  Smaller cities with low power costs and good telecom access are best.

Power provider Duke Energy states on their website:

For the past five years, central Indiana has ranked first in high-tech job growth in the Midwest and fourth nationwide. This growth not only means greater connectivity and state-of-the-art information services for area business, but it also provides more opportunities and economic incentives for high-tech companies who are looking to start or expand their business in Indiana.

Do the math.  If lower costs and higher uptime appeal to you, give the Chicago colocation alternative a call.

Jacob Gsoedl: Outsourcing disaster recovery services vs. in-house disaster recovery

Whether to create a disaster recovery (DR) site in-house or to outsource disaster recovery is a fundamental decision that needs to be made when creating a disaster recovery strategy. The in-house approach may be tempting, with the assumption that the work related to DR can be performed by existing staff. Unfortunately, experience shows that in-house disaster recovery is more likely to fail than outsourced DR services.

According to an IDC study, enterprises that didn't outsource lost on average $4 million per disaster incident across a variety of business functions (e.g., sales/marketing, financing, e-commerce). In contrast, enterprises that outsourced to a third party lost an average of $1.1 million per incident. The study adds that companies that leverage an in-house model spend 32% more than those opting to outsource.

The study further shows that outsourcers can provide a shorter window of recovery, as measured by recovery time objective (RTO) over in-house operations by a reduced factor of 0.62. The study concludes that primary and DR data centers are more likely to get out of sync if disaster recovery services are performed in-house

The Chain Continues: 7 Things about Doug Theis

In the spirit of an insidious chain letter, I got tagged by Rae Kridel, who requested I contribute to this 7 Things continuum. So here are seven things about me, Doug Theis:

1. I’m a tail end baby boomer – born to the son of a poor Minneapolis immigrant family and the daughter of a successful northwest Florida farmer. My parents met during World War II. I have one sister who's 13 years older than I am. That's old.

2. I’m an Indiana state high school soccer champ – I played for Heritage Christi… Continue

Smaller Indiana helps dog find new home

A few weeks ago my family and I had to make the tough decision to put one of our long-time pets down. Our cat George had become sick and there was no hope. While it was a sad, it was time, and it was the only humane thing to do.

Shortly thereafter, Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, blogged on Smaller Indiana that his dog, a seven year old female black Lab mix named Bailey, needed a new home. Scott was moving t… Continue

Requiem for our cat George

Back in 1995 when my children were 6 and 4, an old friend, Mark Graham, gave my family a couple of cats that were part of the same litter. Both cats where white; one had long hair and one had short hair. Jimmy, our oldest, and Emily our youngest child, were both very excited. We brought our new cats home, and when we arrived at our house, we let them out to explore. The long haired cat started investigating the building, and I commented that it was curious. Jimmy immediately said “Curious George… Continue

The transformation of Eastgate Mall by Lifeline Data Centers

Thanks to all for the e-mails, notes and phone calls of congratulations regarding Lifeline's new data center and office facility in the former Eastgate mall. We've received national press coverage in IT and real estate publications. Interest is high.

Work progresses well as we have removed about 10 40-ton dumpsters of trash with another 20 or so dumpsters to go. Job one is converting the old Burlington Coat Factory into hardened computer room facilities. We will have that data center space avai… Continue
