I signed up for this volunteer stuff nearly 20 years ago and get paid a whopping $500/year for it. Now how crazy is that!? ;o )

I'm extremely biased in my answer here, but firefighters. No doubt in my mind the men and women who do this job are heroes. On Feb 12th 2008 I was fighting my second house fire in less than 8 hours and as everything had settled down and we were i...

First, to those who say "No", "Hell No", etc, it would have been nice for you to share an opinion of why you would not like to see him run. I just answered "Hell no" (sort of) because the question was "should mitch daniels run for president", I wa...

Why not pay for a quality online newspaper? I'm not saying I would either, because, well, for #1 I own my local site and #2, I'd Google it or look elsewhere like most others and I assume that's your reasoning as well?

I think any social media site needs to offer some sort of call to action that would make people want to pay for it. Would I pay $1.00 a year for FB? $5.00/yr? Yea, probably, but that's only because I've made a few (not a lot) business deals off of...

Does Smaller Indiana have a chance to be a player in the "new" media business? I think Erik made the most interesting and comprehensive response to the question at hand. Yes, SI can become a player as a resource for news as a community, but probab...

Business, YouTube & Creativity

Whether you run a small business out of your home or work for a large corporation, you can use YouTube to promote your company. And unless you've been living under a very dark rock for the last few years, you know that YouTube is a video sharing website where anyone, including yourself, can upload videos for others to view.

I'm well aware of this and I'm sure you are too. At this very moment I am seriously considering using it for my business, but as I sifted through some of the business videos… Continue

The Ups and Downs of Business (Part Three)

I’ve been up. I’ve been down. But nothing prepared me for the exciting events that took place early 2007.

Successful businesses usually start off the new year with fresh ideas. Putting pen to paper, they come up with plans to make that year better than the last. I was no different.

In my first year I went through the experience of slow times. I felt the panic of no money coming in. I also suffered through sparse, grueling and uncreative projects, just to keep the cash flowing. The reality of t… Continue

The Ups and Downs of Business (Part Two)

In Part One, I was happily living the creative dream life with a full time business of my own. Being my own boss, I could and did make my own hours. Work came to me so no more chomping at the bit waiting for the phone to ring. I didn’t have to market every day, because, by golly, I had work coming in! I’m figuring this is a piece of cake. I felt like I was on the top of the world with the perfect business … a dream busines… Continue

Social Media Creates A Better 'User Experience'

In 2004 I was quite the late comer to web design and development. I mean, let's face it, the web was really taking off at that point and I was a bit behind. Be that as it may, even back then (yea, as if 4 years ago was SO long ago) we were constantly taught about 'user experience'.

The user had to be in control and you should not control them. When they visited it had to be their choice on what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

In the last several years social media has put that control b… Continue

The Ups and Downs of Business

Every business goes through its ups and downs. The graphic design business is no different. The best way to survive down times and live life to the fullest is to plan ahead. But, even the best laid plans can get disrupted by unforeseen events. That’s where contingency planning comes into play. They can save your business

In the next five posts I’ll walk you through a real life business situation. Mine. Hopefully you gain insight as to how running your business can be fun, frustrating, scary and… Continue

Hello, I am new to Smaller Indiana and thought I would reach out to connect and say hello. My name is Brandon and I am the Director for Musical Medicine. We build music libraries for hospitals.

Are you planning on attending the Chocolate Blues and Business Networking Festival next Thursday? I hear it's going to be huge, they expect about 1,500 people to attend. It should be a great networking day! I have free tickets, if you need a ticket, let me know and I'll email you one. If you want more details about it, it's listed under events on the 26th.

Have a good day and I look forward to networking with you. Please let me know if I can ever do anything for you,
Brandon

Thank you for the comment on the 'Why I like Indiana' blog that I did. Indiana without the corn fields just wouldn't be the same. Thanks!

1985 - think - Chad Hesting, Andrea Norman - etc... I don't remember a Ed Schearer! Regarding the Frazier's I'm related to - well - not any of those in Busco. Mine are from Straight Creek, Kentucky. My aunt - Carolyn Wilkins - is who lives in busco. She is who I lived with when I graduated from high school.

Well Hey Chris! I actually graduated from Churubusco in 1985. I grew up in Fort Wayne most of my life. I live in Fishers now. I miss the heck out of Fort Wayne - but there doesn't seem to be much in jobs for me up that way....

A few things to consider before joining Smaller Indiana:

1. We want to know the real you...Please use your real name (first and last) when you sign up, or we cannot open your account

2. We want to know the real you...Please do NOT use your Smaller Indiana blog for blatant self promotion

3. We want to see your smiling face...Please do not use logos or commercial images for your profile photo
