Let's talk Java! A great way to meet someone is to invite them for coffee. What is your favorite venue? Also, if you'd like you can tell us about some experiences you've had when you met for a cup of joe.

Snow Day

Took a snow day today. I haven't gone outside since I dug out the car for Sandy. I didn't see the point of driving across town to sit in the shop by myself. I am sure there are some hearty souls who thought it was a good day to hang out at the local coffee shop, but I think it safer for me and my barista to stay home.

I am offering a dollar off of a 12 or 16 ounce bag of coffee tomorrow and Friday to make up for being closed. So, I will extend that to all of you SI folks as well.

Stop in tomor… Continue

Church Arts Fair

We have been working the Broadway UMC arts fair this weekend. I guess it wasn't advertised very well, or people think an art and gift fair at a church is going to be the typical church bazaar. Well this one is not. The vendors include neighborhood artists, church going artists, and a couple of vendors selling Fair Trade items. One of the artists is my friend Duane Carlisle, he is a fantastic potter! His ceramics look a little different than a lot of the potters in town, I can't put my finger on… Continue

Sunday evening at the coffee shop.

Here I sit listening to the roaster hum, and Sandy curse the flame for going out.

She roasted last week and yesterday after we closed. We tasted some Colombia that she roasted yesterday. It was a little too fruity for her tastes, but I thought it was ok. I would like to see a bit more caramel in the flavor. It did go a tad sour once cooled.

Flame didn't go out yesterday, so she thought it was perhaps some moisture in the drum. Wonder why it is doing this today?

Well today she roasted some mor… Continue

And now for a lovely bit of luck............

I got a call on Monday, would I do a catering for Tuesday? I almost said no, well at first I did say no. It was for 60 and I thought they were talking lunch. No they just needed a morning snack with coffee, tea and hot cider. Ok. Delivered to the airport at 10AM, Ok. Who is this for, I ask?

We need to have something for the press and staff when they get in town with Obama.

I did not drop the phone.

I said yes of course I can do this.

I baked all day Monday and into the night. Y… Continue

New things. New coffees, New ideas........

So I was plodding along in my little caffeinated world, thinking how bored I was getting with the same 'ol coffees. I loved my coffee roaster, Tim, he roasted a fine cup of joe, but he wasn't very adventuresome. I was reading about coffees with natural flavors of berries, citrus, melon, florals of hibiscus, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, herbs and spices. I could get these flavors out of his coffees most of the time, but I wanted to experience some of those flavors that other roasters were descr… Continue

HI! I'm pretty new to SI, and was surfing around this morning and saw your mention of Coffee Fest on Shari Boultbee's page. My business is not in coffee, but I love my hot cup of joe! How can I learn more about Coffee Fest?

BJ. Yes we are going to Coffee Fest. It will be our first. We are looking at several class. Accommodation, parking and eating are the thing we need to work out.The organizers seem to have used the most expensive place they could find. That is hard for the little, new coffee people. Do you have plans on those things yet?

BJ. I recently got an article given to me by Kate at the Grant County Economic Growth Council, it was about you. And now I find you here. I own an Midwest Organic Coffee Company in Marion. Coffee has become more and more a passion. We take great pride in roasting our 12 single origins to the sweet spot. Sometimes tasting a new coffee can take your breath away. We love to talk about coffee. I think we drive our friend crazy sometimes. But they put up with us for the free cups of coffee. They are our test subjects when we are considering a new coffee. Love to hear from you. See us on line at: www.midwestorganiccoffee.com

Really dig your shop. I popped in a few weeks ago and you made me the most delicious (and beautiful) mocha I've had in a long time. I'll make it a point to stop in every time I'm in the area.

Thanks, BJ!

I'm a freak about my coffee. I need to find your shop.

Check out:
www.BlueBottleCoffee.com (one of our web-clients)
www.MainStreetCoffees.com (my hometown shop)

I use a stove-top espresso maker or my french press. Main St.'s "Roasters Blend" is dark and yummy. My studio is up in Farmland, but have an office on 86th St. near Meridian. Is that close to your shop?
