Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I am interested in hooking up with a capable and ethical literary agent who knows how to shop manuscripts to book publishers, especially in the nonfiction sports area. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Your best bet may be to check the 2009 Writers Market. They list most of the agents -- at least the ethical ones. Avoid any that offer reading fees or paid editing services.

Even better is to go to a conference. The Midwest Writers Workshop is coming up and they will have agents there. http://www.midwestwriters.org/

Here are a few options:
Check out Terry Whalin online. If I remember correctly he is from Arizona (we can't hold that against him), but has one of the more respected books out on finding a good agent. He is well established and it would be easy to verify his reputation to your satisfaction.

Call Ray Hilbert in Indianapolis at his work, Turh at Work (near 96th Street in Indy). he co-authored a book. his agnet sold it internationally first. it was a best seller (quarter of a million copies) BEFORE it was published by a very willing US publisher in 2007.

The Midwest Writers Conference comes up in late July in Muncie. Several of the leaders teach at Ball State. You may find their info online from the school web site. Otherwise, the Greenwood Public Library hosted a free writers seminar by the same group this past Saturday (January 17). Call the library at 317-881-1953 and ask for Kendra.

If youre mss have a local focus they might be able to find a home at The History Press.

Check out our website (www.historypress.net) and/or feel free to shoot me an email (jonathan.simcosky@historypress.net).

All best,

Have you tried www.agentyquery.com? It has a searchable database. Good luck!! I'm beginning the query process as well for nonfiction relationship books. A bit daunting, but think positively! Is your manuscript complete?
