Good call. I would have said "publish it."

How do I do thatr without getting ripped off?

If it's got a local focus, send it to me at The History Press and we might be able to make something of it.

First of all, get copies of Writer's Digest and the International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses. Find several publications that you believe will fit the type story you have written and go to the library or the bookstore and buy them, just to make sure. Then follow the submission guidelines for these publications and submit, submit, submit. When get a rejection letter—and you probably will—send the manuscript back out. Keep trying until youo are published.

The biggest tip I ever received from my writing teacher in college is make sure you send the next submission out before you read the rejection letter. You'll know when you are accepted. You will either receive copies of the magazine as in kind payment (the most popular way of paying) or you will see a check. No check, then there is no reason to read the letter; instead, resubmit.

are you a member of any critique groups? some people find them useful. i have a group of friends whose opinions i trust (Read: they delight in ripping my work to shreds). my first step is to get feedback and do a second draft. once it's in fighting shape, then i send it out ... so that the cruel, cruel publishing world can pummel it about.
