Well using Smaller Indiana to get connected to other individuals through out the area interested in building professional relationships. I join every group here on SI that I feel a connection to, and try and get involved with as many people as I can. Just starting out in my practice it is crucial to get your name out there in everyone's head. Obviously building these connections takes time and usually doesn't result in any immediate compensation, but I am a firm believer that it is always better to build relationships that could result in repeat business or referrals than the quick buck.

You're asking the right question, "How do you develop relationships" as opposed to "how to I get more customers." The first step in starting a relationship is putting yourself out there. It is important to find a vehicle that works for your personality type. In the past I have rented booth space at health fairs and walked away with talking to only a handful of people, but I have know people who have doubled their practice in one day at a similar event. If you want to create relationships people need to know what you do. Not telling someone what you do is like wearing a wedding ring and wondering why you're still single. There is most definitely an art to letting people know what you do without sounding salesy. You never know who is going to be your best source of referrals, so never pre-judge anyone.
