While there is no doubt that certification does not ensure total competency, it IS another tool to use in distinguishing yourself and your business from your competition to your customers and prospects.

I've never asked an insurance agent or financial planner about his or her certification -- however, the one who explained his to me, what it took to attain it, and his commitment to the profession, got my business. I didn't ask --but his excellent use of certification played a role in making me a client.

I've been asked if you have to be an NSA member to be a professional speaker -- and the answer is absolutely not. The only point I'm strong about is that if you aren't an NSA member, then you should not speak to professional associations.

If you won't be a part of the association of your own industry, then how is it anything less than hypocritical to take money to speak to other professionals and encourage them to be a part of theirs?

Been a professional speaker and business coach for 10 years. Coached well over a hundred new entrepreneurs in start up businesses and spoke throughout the US and I have never been asked about my certifications.

I have to agree with Jeff. Having a certification is like passing a driving test: it doesn't prove you are a great driver, rather, just that you once showed one person an example of driving that was not horrendous.

Certifications are merely reminders of the importance of effort, experience and expertise. They might open doors but it's the person who must close the deal and complete the work.

This will irritate a bunch of coaches and a bunch of certification programs.

The best certification is "been there, done that." There are too many coaches from too many certification programs who paid a princely sum to get certified, but they have never 1) signed a payroll check 2) been responsible for top line, bottom line and every line in between 3) signed a personal guaranty for a bank that meant their house and childrens' college was on the line or 4) been in a real board of directors meeting or VC meeting. If you have those qualifications, you don't need any paid program to vouch for you. Your resume and reputation speak a much clearer message. Just my humble opinion of course.
