The dog looking in the window at the top of this page is my Sadie, she is so sweet, calm and gentle. When my daughter moved out, she took Sadie and my grandchildren, oh and son in law with her. I was left home alone, thinking I would adopt another dog. Well, today Sadie came back to me....it seems that she and the little beagle dog kept escaping the fenced back yard. People like the beagle, they shoo him home but they would chase Sadie with brooms and throw things at her out of FEAR, and I cannot say I blame them. Based on all of the NEWS stories about the mean Pit Bulls they have built a false perception.

Out of love for Sadie my daughter brought her back to me to live, she has a bigger fenced yard and with out the beagle does not try to escape. So there is less risk of people trying to hurt her out of fear and ignorance. Unfortunately ALL dogs have the ability to Bite. Last week it was a Lab mix that bit a boy in the face, not a fierce Bully dog.

Breed Specific Legislation is unfair to all of us, and I hope that every person on this site will take a stand against BSL, next it could be you poodle!

So cute, DuJuanna!

As pit lovers have probably heard, BSL has reared its ugly head again; read HSI's position statement on Breed-Specific Legislation.

DuJuanna -Beautiful dog...the expressions on their faces seem to be always ones of gratitude and a seeking to please their owners. Your dog is very expressive! How old is she?

Hi folks,

This just came across the IndyFeral listserv. Thought it was right up your alley!

Chulo is the Pit Bull Ambassador of the Humane Society for Hamilton County, and he would like to cordially invite you to attend a Pit Bull Education Workshop on Saturday, March 14th from 1P.M. to 3P.M. at the shelter.

The workshop is open to everyone. We encourage the media and anyone who has a negative perception of the breed to attend so you can learn first-hand what this breed is really all about.

Come out and meet Chulo and some of his amazing bully friends. The “Kiss-a-Pit” booth will be open all day so you can experience the enthusiastic and irresistible love of our featured adoptable Pit Bulls!

Please RSVP to hamiltonhumane@yahoo.com if you would like to attend the workshop.

Yes, it's me again! Can you tell I love critters?

In case you didn't receive the newest email from Indy Pit Crew...

BSL Rears It's Ugly Head in Indianapolis!

***Now is the time to contact your City-County Council Representatives. Please contact the Councilor that represents your district and ALL At-Large Councilors.***

FIND YOUR COUNCILOR: http://imaps.indygov.org/GovntProfile/

FIND ALL COUNCILORS, INCLUDING THOSE AT LARGE: http://www.indy.gov/eGov/Council/Councillors/Biography/Pages/home.aspx

We have been working behind the scenes to get as much information as possible. What we have found is that there is some interest in a Breed Specific Ordinance of some type. This could affect every responsible "pit bull" owner in this county, and if passed, would set a precedence for BSL in surrounding counties, as well.

It's not time to panic, it's time to be level headed and voice your stance where it counts..........with your City-County Councilor (CCC). The City-County Council is the body who makes our ordinances, not the news, not the Mayor, not the people on the message boards.

We were told by one CCC that he considers 3-4 calls on a single subject to be a lot.

YOUR CALL MATTERS!!!!

PLEASE DON'T WAIT. CALL TODAY!

Please do not be intimidated in doing this. The CCC's are very approachable. Just let them know that you do not support any type of Breed Specific Ordinance, Breed Specific Regulation, or Breed Specific Legislation (say all 3). Even if our dogs are only restricted and not banned, Breed Specific Regulations ARE UNACCEPTABLE!!!!Make the point that this is a people problem and not a dog problem and that you do not want your rights taken away because of the mistakes of irresponsible owners. Find out what your CCC's stance is and let us know! Send an email to info@indypitcrew.org Be respectful and remember that level heads will prevail!

BSL IS INEFFECTIVE-What to Say

- BSL FAILS TO IMPROVE PUBLIC SAFETY AND IS NOT EFFECTIVE IN DECREASING DOG BITES.
- BSL DOES INJUSTICE TO DOG-BITE VICTIMS BECAUSE BANNING OR RESTRICTING CERTAIN BREEDS DOES NOT PREVENT NON-RESTRICTED BREEDS FROM BITING, THUS CREATING A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY IN THE COMMUNITY.
- BSL IS COSTLY TO IMPLEMENT AND COSTLY TO ENFORCE.
- BREED IDENTIFICATION IS NOT AS EASY OR AS OBJECTIVE AS ONE MIGHT THINK.
- BSL MAKES TARGETED DOGS ATTRACTIVE TO DANGEROUS OWNERS AND REPULSIVE TO RESPONSIBLE OWNERS, WHO JUST WANT A "NORMAL" DOG.
- BSL DOESN'T ADDRESS OWNER ACTIONS THAT CREATE DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, WHICH CAN OCCUR REGARDLESS OF THE BREED OF DOG.
- BSL PLACES UNREASONABLE BURDENS ON RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS.
- CITIES WITH BANS KILL INNOCENT, STABLE, FAMILY PETS.
- BSL IS NOT SUPPORTED BY ANY PROFESSIONAL DOG ORGANIZATIONS.
- TARGETED BREED OWNERS ARE PEOPLE, TOO.
- BSL IS EQUIVALENT TO RACIAL PROFILING.

BSL IS INEFFECTIVE-What NOT Say

- DON'T SAY THAT THE ENTIRE BREED IS PERFECT. THERE ARE DANGEROUS DOGS OF EVERY BREED TYPE, EVEN PIT BULLS. FOCUS ON ALL DANGEROUS DOGS, REGARDLESS OF BREED.
- DON'T EQUATE BSL WITH THE HOLOCAUST.
- DON'T COMPARE REGULATING PIT BULLS TO REGULATING GUNS. THIS IS NOT A GOOD TALKING POINT!

Interesting idea: Tax Breaks to Encourage Pet Adoptions

Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, from Santa Clarita, CA, has introduced legislation to provide a tax deduction, allowing individuals to deduct the adoption fees of animals from local government and non-profit animal shelters.
