At least the way I've always envisioned it is "the cloud" is just a renaming of the old ASP (application service provider) model, whereas virtual and co-located servers generally mean you're doing your own support, or paying someone to handle it for you.

I think the main drawback of "the cloud" is exactly what we saw this week with Ning (who provides hosting for this site) ... ie: Your data/services/whatever are at the mercy of people you probably don't know, behind security you can't control, and at the mercy of a company whose stability (depending on whether they are public or not) you can never really be certain of -- particularly in this economy where huge multinational corporations are going belly-up without much notice.

A virtual server consists of several instances of a server OS running simultaneously on the same server. Normally using either VMWare or Citrix's XenServer. They are often used as the backbone behind "Cloud" configurations. But they are also used in many non-cloud installations.

In other words cloud is just a buzz word for off site resources. Little or no difference from a virtual or co-located server.

In most cases, when people say "Cloud" they mean "resources accessed over the Internet and/or a remote-access (WAN) link." Some of the marketing folks at VMWare and Citrix have undertaken referring to your company's locally-hosted virtual-machine environments as your "private-cloud"--I'll leave those debates to those with their heads in the clouds (pun intended.)

For most companies that aren't embracing the "off-site cloud" model, the hesitation is adding the ongoing expense of redundant WAN/Internet circuits to their annual budgets in perpetuity, in addition to their monthly commitment to pay the cloud hosting provider. These redundancies aren't optional if your business applications make it possible for your company to generate revenue. In that case, there would be no "getting by" without your Internet or WAN service, since that is how you would access your business-critical applications.

In that case No Internet (or no WAN) means no revenue and profit.

whats the difference between a virtual server and your cloud?

Is your company moving to the cloud? If not, what is holding you back?
