Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Most southsiders are familiar with the Acropolis, just west of Madison on Southport Road. Friendly wait staff and a comfortable casual atmosphere accompany above-average greek fare. The salads are very good. Belly dancers entertain on the weekends. This is an Indy institution.

I ate there once about 15 years ago. What I remember most about it was that the owner came over sat down and started talking to us as if he had known us all his life. Very warm and friendly. No particular reason for not going back other than we just don't think about it. For the past few years our favorite has been Santorini's near Fountain Square. Athens on 86th is a block or 2 from our home but we'd rather drive downtown 'cause we like it so much.

Over the years I've heard many southsiders laugh about northsiders thinking that the south side is just short of Louisville in terms of distance. I live right up the hill from the Acropolis. I also concur on Santorini's.

But do those southsiders come up here???

We have to if we want to shop at retail establishments like Costco, Trader Joe's, and a few others!

I was just asking someone today (who lives in Greenwood) if she liked to go to DeBrand and she didn't know what I was talking about. She said she rarely ever ventures on the north side. I, on the other hand, am all over the city meeting with clients so I've gotten a decent lay of the land in the short time we've lived here.

As for Acropolis, I LOVE Greek so we'll have to put this on the list. What's that place just a block from Shapiro's South Side, with the "floor show" of yelling and cursing from the owners? I've heard that the food is great, but it's the family entertainment that really makes it.

Are you talking about Greek Islands on Meridian? I used to go there all the time when I was working at Lilly.

I like Banura. It's on Michigan right around 79th. I've gotten to know the owner pretty well and he has a great family.

Oh, and I'll admit that I haven't gone to the south side in years unless it's to eat.

Yeah, that's the one. I'm kind of all over the city, and lately, have been spending my mornings in Greenwood while my son's in preschool down there. If anyone is in the neighborhood, I hang out at Strange Brew on Smith Valley Road M-TH from 9-11 a.m. It's this fabulous coffee shop with excellent music and brew and giant fish tanks. Oh, and very strange art on the walls. Love the place.
