Making people and ideas findable

I just finished some bake from frozen pierogie and am hankering for some real, honest to goodness, homemade pierogie. Anyone know of a place in the Indy or Evansville areas that serves them?

Thanks. How do you cook your pierogy? Every time I've tried to cook them on top of the stove, it's a huge mess. Baked in the oven is ok. But that might be because I'm using sub-par pierogies (Mrs. T's).

I think I see a trip to Chicago in my future.

I don't know of any restaurants here in town. Brian Huff mentioned a South bend venue for them. If the craving is strong. Marsh has frozen potato filled, as does Gordon Food Service, I believe. I have not seen sauerkraut filled frozen.

I have not found a place locally but we bring them back from Cleveland, Ohio when I visit family there. They have a bakery that makes them and they are incredible and freeze well. If you find a place here, let me know. Not sure when we are heading to Ohio next but if you'd like, I can bring you some back. It's hard to enjoy Mrs. T's after you've had these!

Do you like them with a soft doughy shell or more like an deep fried empanada shell? In reference to Doug's comment, there's a true hole in the wall place in South Bend, IN that my family's been going to since I was a little kid. They make chesse and kraut pierogies that are to die for. They're deep fried and about the size of a small pot pie. I'm always disappointed when I eat any other pierogie because these are sooooo good!
If I can find pierogies like these around here, I'll definitely broadcast it!

I've never had them fried, so I was referring to the soft doughy kind. Having said that, I haven't met a fried food I didn't like, so I'm definitely up for trying deep fried pierogy!

Amy, I thought that maybe Russia House Restaurant, on W. 86th, right next to the Marsh at Ditch Road, might have them. But I poked around on Google and found this link, for a pierogi festival in Whiting, IN. It's coming up this month on the 25th, 26th and 27th so make your travel plans now! Can anyone say "Hole in the Wall Road Trip?"

Are you kidding me? How have I not been to this before now!? I am definitely making an all out effort to check this weird food festival out!

Since it's this weekend, I was surprised no one mentioned it. Word online seems to be that this is THE PLACE to go for pierogis in Indiana. Amy, I guess the timing on your post was perfect.

Maybe anyone who is interested in going to meet up somewhere on the north side Saturday or Sunday morning, and car pooling can be cobbled together.

Darn it all. We already planned to go visit my folks in Ohio this weekend! It'd probably be crazy do drag my 3 kiddos up there and back on Friday. Oh well, there's always next year. If anyone does go, please report back!

So -- did anyone go to Pierogy Fest? How was it?
