Jane,

I think your right on; those are all basic hopes for the emerging church.

i would also add "friendship" to the mix... and probably something about social justice too.

Your conversation is intriguing... I'll be "goodsearching" the term,"emerging church." It sounds like you're talking about authentic relationship, discipleship and accountability... yes?

I grew up in central Indiana in a conservative and traditional 'Holiness movement' church. I became somewhat familiar with the emergent church movement when I moved to Seattle for my masters work at Mars Hill Graduate School, one of the hubs of the emergent movement. Now back in central Indiana, while I don't attend what's considered an 'emergent' church, I do continue to be interested in how this movement is shaping the contours of the church's life and practice, specifically in the paths of spiritual formation.

I like that! Emerging to me means personal, authentic, real, individual. A dinner with some friends at a local pub seems perfect to me!

Hey all! My name is Adam and I am Shalom's husband. I'm excited to be a part of this group as I have really seen how the emerging church conversation could really influence the Church as a whole. In response to your question Dave, to walk into our church on Ball State's campus, you wouldn't naturally think "Emerging Church." However, there is a strong focus on house churches that often operate independent of the larger worship gathering. Also, they will occasionally offer opportunities to respond to parts of the service through writing. Although, it is probably their missional approach to ministry that brings them to the brink of the emerging movement. To them, evangelism might be holding a Bible study in the local pub or playing 4-square with BSU students and then inviting them over for dinner that night. It is a much different approach than the typical evangelical church.

That's sounds awesome Shalom! What makes your church "Emerging"?

Just reserved it at the library. Looking forward to reading it.

I've been participating in the emerging church discussion from the very beginning. Tony Jones' new book "The New Christians" really got me thinking about the relevance of the church and what it means to be an "emerging church" in Indiana? Is it just about incense, candles and icons? Or is there more to it? Is about deconstructing the old way of doing things, or have we been able to construct something useful? What's been your experience with the emerging church?
