Hey all! Make sure you come check out the Indy Pet Expo today (State Fairgrounds, 11-4). I was there all day yesterday and had a blast!! Sooo many vendors, great entertainment and rescue groups! It will take you at least a couple of hours to get through it.

Also, Pet Supplies Plus owner, Nick Milano, is caged. He has been in a dog crate since Friday night. He will stay n till 250 pets are adopted, and 250 spay/neuter gift certificates are purchased (only $20 this weekend - great gift!)

My guess would be if the Advantage® is no longer working, that some of Rico's skin problems are caused by things other than fleas. The list is endless--scabies, demodex, Cheyletiella, allergies to food, dust mites, storage mites, pollens, molds, contact allergies to anything in his environment, hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, yeast or bacterial skin infections, even skin cancer...These things need to be ruled out systematically or treated. Skin issues are neither easy nor inexpensive to treat unfortunately. Use Advantage® only as the package instructs. Overusing it can cause health issues as well. The same goes for any product- More doesn’t equal better. SynoviG3 or Cosequin are the brands of glucosamine/chrondroitin sulfate that have worked best for my dogs and my patients. The source does make a difference in the efficacy. You need to use glucosamine/chrondroitin sulfate consistently for at least 6 weeks before you may see effects. It is safe treatment to use early on for arthritis, but it isn’t very strong-it lubricates the joints; it isn’t a pain reliever. Additionally, arthritis should be proven by radiographs. If not, you might be treating for arthritis when you are actually dealing with bone cancer, bacterial or fungal bone infections or hip dysplasia.

I would try glucosamine with MSM verses gluc/chron. This seems to work really well for my 12 yr old who has severe arthiritis. You can get some Dasiquin from your vet or ask them what over the counter supplements compliment this. The ingredients are slightly different in the OTC vs dog specific supplements. Some studies have shown that the gluc.chron are not absorded as well and the gluc/msm.

we use advantage also and it seemed to work fine until last month so we ended up using an extra months package only after waiting an extra week...so now we have a cream called "flys off" and its for wounds and sore spots and that combined with regular flea powder every few days sort of keeps him comfortable. it takes him so long to heal... since his fur is white you can see his "pink butt" until it heals completely..next step is the dreaded cone so he cant exacerbate his tender skin.. he is 11 and getting real slow..wont even jump up into his favorite chair anymore....we just want his remaining time to be comfortable...on another note what can you tell me about glucosamine /chrondroitin supplements? we tried a dried chicken snackfortified with that but not sure if it works and im wondering if we can up the recommended dosage without any harm? thanks...Dr. A.K

I'm a veterinarian. If your dog has a flea allergy, then the cure would be to prevent the fleas. However, flea allergic dogs may turn out to have allergies to other things as well. The good thing about fleas allergies (if there is a good thing) is that they are very easy to prevent. Monthly use of topical Advantage or Frontline would be the best bet. I use Advantage Multi on my own pets-It is a prescription medication because it also contains heartworm preventative.

I guess it depends upon the nature of the situation. My dog never had fleas. Her allergy was much like a hayfever and as she aged her skin was dry....and she loved baths.

the vet said its an allergy to the flea fecal matter and a lotion is in order im just looking for other solutions like a good home remedy...my dog is allergic to corn and corn products...purdue figured that one out so we have special food and the cats do too since the dog can find cat poo in the yard ...oooh yuck..oatmeal baths help but he hates the water..

My previous dog developed some slight allergies in the fall. After seeing what the prescription med cost I tried the generic over the counter allergy med...I think benedryl and discovered Aveeno oatmeal lotion. Problem was solved and the dog did not get drowsy as she was 45 lbs and got 1 pill a day or less. She loved the lotion on her tummy!
