Brian:
My membership began over a year ago at the Columbia Club. For those in this group that are not members of the club, let me offer a tour and membership information. This downtown oasis is perfect for an eco-urban lifestyle. To learn more read my blog at www.agreenerindiana.com.

Are all the members of this group here on Smaller Indiana actually members of our club?

The Club (finally) has a new website! Same URL, but updated looks and functionality.

The Club has a really great membership offer this month. I've posted this in the Blatant Self-Promotion Forum but thought I'd include it here as well, for folks in this group who may not also be CC members.

“Heart of the City” 120th Anniversary Membership Promotion

As the Columbia Club celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2009 the Club will share its rich traditions and history in the community with potential members through a one-time special membership incentive. Since the Columbia Club was established in the “Heart of the City” on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, on Feb. 13, 1889, we will offer a special reduced initiation fee for the month of February 2009.
Prospective members who apply to join the Columbia Club between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28, 2009, can take advantage of a reduced one-time initiation fee of $120. This limited-time offer is a significant savings off the regular one-time $1,500 Resident Member initiation fee and the $500 initiation fee for Associate Resident Members, Non-Resident Members and Associate Members.

Contact information for more details and a link to the brochure can be found on the Columbia Club’s website, or by calling (317) 761-7517.

Does anyone know if the CBN Tuesday lunch group is meeting this up coming Tuesday?

2008 has been a tremendous year. So why not end it on a high note by attending the Columbia Club’s New Year’s Eve party on none other than December 31st!

Come celebrate your Club! The evening will feature:

Heavy hors d’oeuvres, passed wine, draft beer and a champagne toast at midnight
Cash bars
Casino style games of Blackjack, Roulette, Craps and Texas Hold ‘Em Poker
Live music for dancing by the Indy Express Band

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with the casino games from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the Club’s second floor and the band playing in the Crystal Terrace from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

The price for the evening is $100 per person inclusive of tax and service charges. If you have not made your reservation already, you can do so by calling (317) 761-7523 or emailing madonnapr@columbia-club.org. Special overnight room rates are available starting at $99. Contact the front desk at (317) 767-1361 or frontdeskres@columbia-club.org.

So come join your fellow Columbians in ringing in a great 2009!

absolutely I agree!

Hershey made Maarten an offer that only a complete idiot would turn down. The fact they wanted him back that much speaks to Maarten's talents and abilities, and to the problem all private clubs have these days- for-profit resorts and hotel chains simply have far more financial leverage than clubs. We're always going to run the risk of losing capable management staff to a resort or hotel that can offer a compensation package that will far outpace what a non-profit club can offer.

That said, Maarten made significant positive differences in the year and a half he's been here. Having used reciprocal clubs in Chicago, NY, St. Paul, San Francisco and Toronto, I'd put the Columbia Club up in the top tier, especially with the improvements that have been made over the last 18 months. Moreover, Maarten was great at improving the public visibility and community networking of the Club. Personally, I'd like to thank him here for two donations he arranged to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society annual Dinner of Champions live auction- in home dinner for 10 with the CC providing food, wine, table services, wait staff and cleaning first floor windows in 2007, and this year a chef's table dinner for 8 with wine, overnight accommodations and 1 month membership. Those donations were responsible for several thousand dollars in auction revenue for the MS Society.

Maarten put the Club on a good track. Hopefully the next GM will have the same vision, talent and sense of outreach and community service.

From IBJ:

Columbia Club manager leaves after short stint

Maarten van Wijk, the general manager hired by The Columbia Club in 2007 to polish its lackluster operations, has been lured back to Hershey, Penn. Club President Gregory Harris informed members of van Wijk's impending departure in a Dec. 9 letter.
