Dear Indianapolis Citizen,

As Mayor, I take great pride in the opportunity to listen to you, the citizen, and learn more about what you need to make your neighborhood and this city more livable. That's why I invite you to take a moment to complete this survey by IUPUI to let us know how we can best serve you.

The purpose of the survey is to get citizens' input. All responses to the survey will remain anonymous and will be analyzed by professional researchers as we work to determine the most efficient ways to bring better services to those who call Indianapolis home.

The survey will take approximately five minutes to finish. Thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing from you. Please respond to this survey by Friday, June 26 at the following link: http://survey.indygov.org/makingindybetter.

Best Regards,

Gregory A. Ballard

At the next Envision Broad Ripple meeting, we will continue to work on design guidelines for the Broad Ripple Avenue area. Our first task will be to review the results of the Visual Image Survey (VIS) that the community completed at the December EBR meeting. The ratings have been compiled, and we will now identify the specific characteristics of the survey images to get a better understanding of the topics that should be dealt with in the design guidelines.

We will then move into a model building exercise. This exercise is designed to encourage community participants to begin to make decisions regarding issues of building and site design. A base model of the area has been created. Participants will be encouraged to think of areas of the community that are likely to change in the next 10-20 years, and then think about what type of new development is desirable on these sites. They will express their ideas by constructing models of the new buildings with building blocks.

Please let us know that you're coming, so that we may prepare adequate handout materials and snacks.

I hope everyone interested in the future of Broad Ripple Village will attend the next Envision Broad RIpple session scheduled for 5:30 - 8 p.m., Thursday, January 15 at the Indianapolis Art Center, 820 E. 67th.

The Envision Broad RIpple Process is a collaboration between the Broad Ripple Village Association, Green Broad Ripple, Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress and HARMONI - historic midtown neighborhood initiative. Every work session focuses on specific areas of the Village and promotes discussion of how to maintain, sustain and preserve the unique qualities of the area. Help us create a more pedestrian, bike & transit friendly village that is greener, cleaner and safer.

When the process is completed, we hope to submit a set of design standards and guidelines to policy makers that they can use to promote sustainable development in the area.

If you'd like to be added to the email notification list for upcoming Envision Broad Ripple events, send a note to: envision.broad.ripple@gmail.com

LEAF SEASON BEGINS IN MARION COUNTY

INDIANAPOLIS – The City of Indianapolis will soon begin collecting fallen leaves throughout Marion County. Last year, more than 13.5 million pounds of leaves were collected during the annual leaf collection program.

From Monday, November 10th through Friday, December 5th, up to 40 bag items will be picked up each week, free of charge. No more than 10 items may be regular household trash. For example, in a hand collection area, a resident may set out 2 bags of trash and up to 38 bags of leaves. Or, 8 bags of trash and up to 32 bags of leaves. For 96-gallon cart collection areas, all leaves must be bagged and positioned at least 3 feet away from the cart in order to allow DPW trucks to continue to service the cart.

To ensure a successful collection effort, Indianapolis residents are asked to follow these simple guidelines:
• Place leaves in plastic or paper bags
• Place leaf bags out by 7 a.m. on your regular trash day
• Clearly identify and separate bags of leaves from regular trash (Place them on opposite sides of the driveway, place in different colored bags, or use different color tie wraps)

Residents should take special care to ensure that sewer inlets and drainage pipes are kept clear of leaves and debris to avoid serious drainage and flooding problems.

Because leaves can be recycled into a useful end product, DPW composts collected leaves and makes them available to the public free of charge. Compost can be used as a soil conditioner, potting soil or mulch. Using compost improves soil aeration, drainage and nutrient exchange – improving the health of lawns and helping gardens grow. Free compost from last year’s program may now be available at the Southside Landfill, 2577 S. Kentucky Ave; 317.247.6808.

As a reminder, it is illegal to burn leaves in Marion County. Smoke from burning leaves pollutes the air with many harmful particles and is hazardous to young children and people with heart and lung disease.

For further information please call the Mayor’s Action Center at 327.4622 or visit www.indygov.org/eGov/City/DPW/Residential/home.htm.

medication disposal at Marsh Pharmacies Saturday

Pouring unwanted medications down the drain doesn¢t protect Hoosiers or our environment. The best way to keep pharmaceutical chemicals out of Indiana¢s lakes and streams is to take unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications to collections. Protect the environment and your family by cleaning out your household medicine cabinets and ensuring the safe disposal of unwanted medications and sharps.
Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, take the following items to your local Marsh Pharmacy:

Prescription medications;
Over-the-counter medications;
Vitamins and nutritional supplements;
Veterinary medications; and,
Sharps or needles, including epi-pens
Follow these safety guidelines during the collection:

All medicines must be in their original containers, do not mix medications.
Seal sharps in a non-returnable, puncture-resistant rigid container (such as a laundry detergent bottle).
Leave the name of the medication visible on the label.
Use a black, permanent marker to black-out personal information, including your name, address and account number.
We will be unable to accept controlled or hazardous substances.
For more information visit the Marsh Web site for locations near you.

This is a reminder-

Thursday, Oct. 9, from 10:00am to 4:00pm there will be a meeting in the House chambers in the Capitol to discuss legislation of tree trimming by utilities.

Public input is solicited. Photos would be most helpful.

Currently property owners have no protection from utility tree trimming crews. Legislation is being pursued to correct this deficiency.

Utility companies are making serious efforts to suppress this meeting, so the public likely will not get notice of it.

It will be interesting to see if any Indianapolis news media provides any mention of it.

Please attend if possible, bringing photos if possible.

Advise your public representatives as to how you feel about the issue.
