Making people and ideas findable

Simple question.. but think about it. What got you started? Why do you continue to do it? What do you get out of it?

Great group, great post.

I've been blogging for a few months as a pragmatic way to journal. I tried writing in a nifty leatherbound "diary" but I can't read my own writing very well, especially when recorded at 11 pm.

The blogging page is so accessible when I have a random thought, there is just no purpose or common theme to what I've written. Ultimately it's been a great way to lock down the thoughts that are rattling around in my brain and to record a few of my fleeting thought and ideas.

I blog for many different reasons.

I have several different blogs. Once is geared to a book I am working on. The publisher has paid me and wants to release the book in 2009 so the blog will help me get material.

The second blog is for my business BNI, I blog for members.

The third blog is just my ranting

Blogging creates visibility and credibility in your market place. It starts to create a reputation for you as an authority.

I love it when the author of a book I'm reading/read has a blog specifically for the book. It is a great way to connect with the author, ask questions you may have had while reading, get fresh examples of concepts from the book, etc. It also lets me stay updated on other books the author may have or is working on I might be interested in.

I blog for visibility, to provide education and information, and for healing. I started a business blog but it fizzled. I want to get it going again. I also like to rant and rave about various issues although I haven't started an official blog there. Most of that ends up on SI! My other blog, Journey Through the Great Sadness, is designed as a healing journal and a way for others to deal with traumatic experiences.

Corporate blogging is a fantastic way to gain visibility for your business. Actually I don't even have a personal blog. I write a ton of entries about business topics. I've had some fantastic results with getting my blogs ranked for keywords on Google, and also with increasing site traffic by linking back to my blog.

I started blogging just recently (within the past month) as a way to indulge in the writing different from the sort I do at my job. It's a creative outlet that happens to be a nice journal/documentation of life as it is happening. While I would love to develop a following, I've found that just putting the thoughts in writing have become an unexpected source of self-satisfaction.
