Avon seeks input from residents about landmark

AVON, Ind. – Since it was purchased in 1999, the Avon Town Hall and Park has been home to a bucolic barn northwest of the Town Hall Park lake. Estimated to be 50 years old, the former horse barn has become a visual landmark for local artists and other park users. However time and Mother Nature have taken their toll on the barn. Structural engineers say the barn will collapse if repairs are not done.
The most critical issues concern the sagging roof. A condition made worse by a January snow storm. The rafters have twisted allowing the metal roof panels to gap and leak. The knee walls are out of plumb so they offer no support to the roof rafters. Except for a few siding issues, the engineers believe the wood is in good shape showing no signs of insect damage or rot. Repairs, which would correct these structural defects, are estimated to cost between $25,000 and $50,000. Even after these repairs are made that the structure would need additional renovation for any kind of public use. Currently, the remote location makes it a target for vandals.
Many people believe that this crib barn represents the area’s culture and heritage. They believe the barn should be saved. The Avon Town Council wants to know what you think.
