Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Our recent media survey revealed that Smoosiers are WAY more likely than most to use Twitter. Over 100 folks are following the Smaller Indiana feed. We send all recent activity into the feed. Is this useful? Or would you like to see a different or filtered feed of, say, just blog posts? And what else / who else are you following? Please share with us how your use of Twitter is evolvoing (for both business and personal use). Share your experiences here

I'll take the second option FTW Amy! The human touch is always preferable.

No, I don't *think* your one of the polar opposites, wouldn't care if you were. I'll still like ya.

Sorry about the hijack, but WTH does FTW mean? ;)

I'm less likely to believe that you actually appreciate my follow if I think it was an automated thank you that everyone gets. But, that's just me.

I don't think people expect an immediate response from you on Twitter anyway.

That's exactly the feeling I get when I get a DM. I feel like a number.

Here's me on Twitter: If I follow you, it's because you are posting informative and interesting updates. I don't need a thank you. If you follow me, I'll check out what you say, and if it's applicable, I'll reply to your updates. Otherwise, it becomes noise. With hundreds of followers, I'd really hate to get a DM from each person that I follow...

That's my opinion..

Is it still considered "conversation" and "social" if it's automated?

Reply to This

I disagree, slightly. I don't think that it is absolutely necessary to receive the DM from the feed accts. If there is a response to the acct, I think it should be replied to (which I do), but IMO, it's not a conversational acct.

I personally get annoyed with all the DM thank you's. Some are cool, but they are run of the mill, for the most part.

Ditto... which makes real, manual 'thank you' DMs stand out even more. Authenticity wins every time ;)

I have to disagree with the auto DM for followers. But I do like the idea of it being a two way communication stream.

No Auto DM. I am completely and utterly against them. If you want to personally welcome someone that follows we can have someone from the Admin staff do this.

I second Noah and Lorraine. Authenticity DOES win every time.

To me, Twitter seems to be one way conversation (if you can call it conversation). You post and maybe someone replies, maybe not and you don't know if anyone reads or cares. On SI you post and chances are, you'll get lots of responses. I'm on both and use both, but prefer the interactions on SI. That being said, I do think it's cool that you can have people all over the world following you (theoretically, at least) on Twitter.
