Hepatitis C Indiana: a social networking site for those affected by Hepatitis C

More than 3 million people are chronically infected with Hepatitis C virus in the United States and about 170 million people have hepatitis C infection worldwide. Up to 10,000 deaths from chronic HCV infection occur every year in the United States. (source: www.hepatitis.about.com)

Hepatitis C Indiana is a new social networking site. Our goal is to create a place where people with Hepatitis C, their family and friends can connect.

Launched just yesterday, April 19, 2009, we are seeking help to spread the word.

Who would benefit from Hepatitis C Indiana?
Anyone infected with the Hepatitis C virus, their family and friends.

While I think this is a great way to help folks with Hepatitis C and their family and friends to connect, I wonder how many will so openly join and let it be known to the world that they have it? Are there any kind of privacy measures in place?

The idea is to simply allow people to connect and they can be as open or as private as they choose. They may choose to simply visit and discover information and resources. Not everyone that joins has Hepatitis C...some are family members or friends and some are resource people.

having hepc is okay. It is the same as diabetes, aids , gay , straight, black or white. no discrimination, no prejudice. the hour is late for that, doncha think ? thanks Rita

There should not be any stigma associated with Hepatitis C, but unfortunately there is even if it is only placed on the individuals by themselves. According to the Center for Disease Control an estimated 3.2 million persons in the United States have chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Most people do not know they are infected because they don’t look or feel sick. Consider that there are about 304 million people living in the United States then one out of every 100 people in the United States has Hepatitis C. With those odds almost everyone living in the United States either has or knows someone who has Hepatitis C. This disease should be getting way more attention and medical research than it does.
