Making people and ideas findable

Ah Earthday. Celebrated April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It is held annually during both spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. It's got its own Website, but it feels kinda stale. Like it's stuck in Web equivalent of the 1970's.

In this era of evnironmental crisis and growing (hyper) awareness, is Earth Day even relevant anyore? Or is it high time that the Earth Day committee steps up efforts to join Web 2.0? Or to ask it another way - did you even know that today is earth day? Share your thoughts here

I sheepishly admit, No, I didn't know it was Earth Day until I woke up this AM. That's not necessarily a bad thing and I'm proud it. Here's why:

Thanks to the thousands of "greenies" who care to take action, the plethora of green ad campaigns, the thousands of corporations jumping on the green bandwagon and making their deeds known and most of all,the local Indy peeps who have influenced me to make better environmental changes have inspired me to make EVERYDAY Earth Day.

Three years ago I was very aware of Earth Day. Why? Because that was the only "green" day of the year for me. I didn't recycle, reduce or reuse. I was a gluttonous fool who only cared about what was convenient for me. Now, it's much different. It's better and I feel damn good about it!The first contribution I made was reducing the amount of plastic I use. I stopped buying bottled water. I feel stupid just thinking about buying bottled water, or bottled anything for that matter. If you're not aware of this ridiculous industry, please study it. You're sure to change your behavior.

The story of stuff video is excellent. I recommend everyone watch it.

Instead of having a blog complaining that there is not enough 2.0 materials produced by Earth Day organizers, why isn't SI helping the Earth Day organizers out by encouraging promotion of those things readily available that maybe we have overlooked. Thanks to David Mark for doing his part and sharing this. After all, if today was not Earth Day I would have never seen that link and now I am better because of it.

Justin,
SI is doing just that...hence the main page announcement and link below to Mashable stuff...the question asked today stems from the fact that Earth Day doesn't make it easy for us to spread the word...they offer no widgets or ready to use content...unlike other cause marketing efforts we've seen recently. I find this surprising given the fact that EArth Day is 30 years old. It makes me wonder if the folks running the initiative are asleep at the switch...still doing what they've always done...which is something many companies are guilty of, not just earth day.

And the story of stuff video is excellent. We posted it on SI 8 months ago. Glad to see it resurface.

Only because I heard it on the radio as I was driving in to work this morning. I said outloud, "Earth, you're beautiful," and then didn't think about it again until I saw this!
