Anyone involved in Google Wave beta?

Google Wave, a product that promises to revolutionize online communication, will go out to about 100,000 beta testers Wednesday.

The Web application from Google Inc. combines elements of e-mail, chat, Wiki documents, blogs and photo-sharing sites to create a form of Internet communication called a "hosted conversation," or a "wave." (Video demo here)

Pat - Wave has great potential, and will be a killer application if and when it is released for mobile. The toolset being used should make porting to Android fairly simple.

If I'm honest, Wave has been a bit of a letdown for me! Of course, I should have expected as much with all of the discussion surrounding its pending launch.

The platform itself could change the way we communicate, but not in its current state. At this point, it's just another "thing to check." Here's my two pennies, since you've asked!

It's a quick way to handle massive volumes of messaging across individuals and the creation of collaborative environments. Wave supports some pretty cool plugins and allows you to create your own, right out of the gate. Fantastic for a new tool to already support this kind of extendability.

COOL.
Clean, customizeable interface rethinks the way we handle messaging and sharing of media and the information that rides upon it. It's fun to use, too.

DANG!
Much to my chagrin, Wave is not an aggregator. This means that it's a tool in its own right, that restricts you to only communicate with others using the tool. If- or when- it can open up to other networks, we'll really be rocking and rolling.

Isn't that the bane of all applications - no portability. Like a spoiled brat they all insist on playing within their own gated playground :-)

No portability? It's an open protocol. It is not a single site/product. "Google Wave" is Google's version. It's likened to email because no one owns email and there are server application providers as well as client application providers.
