Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

We’re a small shop of seven people, and our VOIP phone system by Aptela is just not keeping up.

Pros:
* nice professionally recorded auto-attendant
* one number, multiple extensions
* voicemail is emailed to the recipient
* the actual VOIP Polycom phones are great

Cons:
* call quality tends to suck
* what else matters??

So, we’re looking for some other options.

If you sell phone systems, great...I want to hear from you. But I really want to hear from other small shops that like and would recommend their phone system.

Any help y’all can provide would be most appreciated.

I have a feeling that it's not the phone system itself, but more has to do with the data network that is supporting the system. You have to ensure that you have enough bandwith to handle the calls, and that you have QoS on your routers to ensure that the phone calls are taking precident over any data. I would recommend having a company do a Network Assessment to see what is going on with the network, and once you determine that, you can decide if you need to replace the phone system itself.

In any type of VoIP deployment, an assessment is a huge piece of the puzzle. The issues with quality, dropped calls, etc. are all network issues.

If I can help, please let me know.

Marissa, Adam,
we have a dedicated DSL connection that we bought just for the phones, and it's still not all that great. some days are ok, other's are not. at it's best, it just feels like a bad conference call or walkie talkie where if two people are talking it's all garbled.

Jon,

I'm afraid that DSL still isn't the best solution for your voice traffic. I don't think it is robust enough, and many times DSL hits the public internet, and itsn't a managed service like at T-1. The goal with VoIP is about managing your network to have the most control over it that you can and to have enough bandwith from the outside coming in to support your phone system and any othe applications that will reside on the data network. If you currently have any now, they could be stealing bandwith away from the phone system. My recommendation is to look at more bandwith like a Managed T-1 (AT&T, Comcast, Egix, Time Warner, etc.) and then have a network assessment done, where they will set equipment on the network and pump data into it to see where there might be holes etc. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Jonathan,

I work for eGIX, we are a telephone company and also a Hosted IP provider. I can explain the issues you are having and the possible solutions. I have worked with other people in the past who where unhappy with Aptela.

How about coffee or a quick phone conversation?

to be honest with you no one can really recommend a phone system without getting more information from you. Each system has its positives and negatives, and without knowing what characteristics are most important with you (e.g. lowest price, fastest service response time, most features, etc.) its hard to find the best fit.

We recommend various companies including, but not limited to, Egix, Paetec, SaveItNow!, and Axia depending on which is the best fit for the individual client.

Hi Jon -

We implement Asterisk based PBX/VoIP phone systems. Feel free to give me a call if you want to talk more. We would be happy to supply (local) references.

I have a similar sized business and I absolutely love Got Vmail. They market it as the "entreneuers phone system". You can increase your number of extensions as your business grows and there are so many options and ways to taylor it to your business that its one of the most versatile phone systems I've seen! You can check it out at www.gotvmail.com
