Making people and ideas findable

I've started a new group, "Freelancing Smoosiers". I thought it would be a good idea to create a group for freelancers to list their skill set. This group will also help people who are in need of a freelancer.

If you are a freelancer, please join this group.

I love it! Count me in. I do PR/marketing - with a special focus on nonprofits. Thanks for setting this up.

Count me in too! I'm a writer (magazines as well as corporate).

I joined. Now what?

I hope in the near future Smooosiers will consider using this group as a way to find a freelancer.

In the mean time, we can start having discussions on various freelancing topics(how to find clients, share stories about freelancing, and etc.).

Great idea. Do you have a web site to find Freelancers like www.elance.com?

Gary,

Currently, there isn't a web site for this group. I could start a thread that lists all the various freelancing web sites.

This group looks great! I'm anxious to see where it leads!

I conduct and facilitate training, and speak on topics relating to achieving and sustaining peak performance for individuals and teams. Key topics include the methodologies of success, communication skills, and leadership develpment. Most of my materials have resulted from practical leadership experience (and plenty of formal instruction) while serving as an officer in the Marines for 25 years, augmented with ongoing study of the science of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), application of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and broad experience dealing with people and organizations striving to enhance their effectiveness. I'm a trainer, speaker, writer, and enthusiastic participant in the process of moving ahead.

Great!

I have solid on-the-job experience writing catalogs and brochures--mainly from my past employer, Galyan's Sports and Outdoor, a loss many, including myself, are still mourning.

Recently, I've composed a lot of PR-focused long copy for the IndyStar and a few new websites. I'm also the news editor for the Morgan County Business Leader. I'm looking to transition into more newsletter work and want to get back into catalog and brochure writing. And I'm pretty good breaking down technology and medical terminology for an everyday audience. I'm an excellent partner for graphic artists who have clients struggling with their content. Thanks for reading.

I'd love to freelance, and did a lot of it when I was I was in radio and tv before moving into PR about 8 years ago. I would love to help write/edit materials for PR and marketing purposes, but I also still have a love for storytelling through video production. In fact, I've been trying to launch a side business to meet a specific, emerging trend in that area. Maybe this could help me jumpstart that (or just make me get off my duff and make it happen). Anyway, thanks for the inspiration!

Freelancing has been on my personal short term goal list. Like most people, I've done odd jobs, but never formally.

Anyone have some tips on how to get started? Brett and Gary, I think it'd be awesome to start another thread of freelancing resources.

Step 1) Identify your skills.
Step 2) Identify your ideal client.
Step 3) Identify your niche.
Step 4) Look in the mirror, spread your arms, and loudly declaren "I am a freelancer!"

After that, it's a blur of phone calls, networking, meetings, and billing.

I've been freelancing for a great number of years to supplement the various full-time jobs I've had in publishing. It's only been since April of 2007 that I've been freelancing full-time as a self-employed photojournalist and designer.

So far I'm doing ok. However, I really want to build a longer, more diverse list of clients. As it is right now, I have far too many eggs in one basket for my comfort level. And, I am still uneasy about not getting that regular pay check every two weeks.

I welcome everyone to visit my website and see what I've been up to and what I'm capable of doing. And never hesitate to call or write if there's something I can help you out with. Even if it's just to find out what the keystroke is to get the copyright symbol. (option-g by the way).
