I have been researching, reading, and listening for awhile now to the small business world in regards to social media and blogging. There are plenty of business owners and professionals in the world who accept social media as a new form of communications... and plenty who do not.

I decided to write a small guide for business owners to gauge whether or not they should be in social media.


10 Reasons You Should Not Be on Social Media As a Business



1. You would rather not change your business model of communication. You are content with direct mail and email marketing. You are right, they will be around in 5 years.

2. The only computer you have in your office is the black and green screen MAC.

3. You purchased a dial-up modem to "save money."

4. You are still struggling with the reply and forward functions in e-mail.

5.You are convinced that the only people using social media are college kids and pot smokers.

6.You feel that the newspaper is still a valuable form of advertising.

7. You designed your logo in powerpoint or publisher and all brochures were designed in the same programs.

8. When asked about time commitment you whine about an extra 30 mins a day to grow your business.

9.Your website was designed pre-2005 and has not been updated.

10. You find that building "trust" in a marketplace is a waste of time.

If you fit any of the following criteria... do me a favor and stay off social media.

See, the problem with satire is that some people just don't recognize it, and thus completely miss the point.

To be honest I fell for it too, but then I am not know to process jokes/satire too fast, English is my second language. I am like Peter Griffin (Family Guy) reading a joke in the New Yorker - "I'd be more apathetic if I weren't so lethargic" took him 3 days to finally get it. .00

It's okay Kyle, be brave. Using energetic "satire" can prompt flame wars.

As for name calling - I'd like to assign myself a flame warrior description. It's only satire folks..........

I'm the toxic granny . I've noticed sometimes Amy Stark and Erik Decker are Eagle Scouts. I saw a hint of Netiquette Nazi in Nicki Laycoax.

Do Kyle a favor, and remember all the things your mother warned you about when using social media.

Nice post.

The post was written with passion (and knowledge) and with an expectation that the audience is self aware and not prone to silly arguing over trivialities that relate to humor. I don't know many of these other players but I think Kyle is a brave professional and I feel his journey - its one that I share in the social media marketing field.

Mr. Chris Fenner and others in your camp - your arguments are muddy, overly charged with emotion and difficult to read (due to the lack of brevity). Its odd that for someone who is so averse to social media that you invest so much of your precious time on this platform. Monetization is certainly a primary interest to most people for most things, but change is inevitable (perhaps you'd have argued against electricity and the phone initially because they weren't measurable and monetizablle).

Now. I agree, that the artifact is not dead. Whatever you say, people still read books, buy records, print brochures. But being a proponent of social media doesn't immediately imply that there is no balance. Certainly artifacts have their place. Life tends to not be black and white in these matters. And just like these artifacts have their place so does social media.

Kyle, I got the humor loud and clear. Keep them coming bro'.

If you have a twitter or facebook for your business and you think that you should give the boot to a social media fan because they share a picture of themselves flipping the bird to the camera, maybe you shouldn't use social media! (no kidding, I had a client ask me to do this) After all, following that line of thought, are you going to boot them out of your place of business when they come in and want to spend money?
