Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I have been researching, reading, and listening for awhile now to the small business world in regards to social media and blogging. There are plenty of business owners and professionals in the world who accept social media as a new form of communications... and plenty who do not.

I decided to write a small guide for business owners to gauge whether or not they should be in social media.

10 Reasons You Should Not Be on Social Media As a Business

1. You would rather not change your business model of communication. You are content with direct mail and email marketing. You are right, they will be around in 5 years.

2. The only computer you have in your office is the black and green screen MAC.

3. You purchased a dial-up modem to "save money."

4. You are still struggling with the reply and forward functions in e-mail.

5.You are convinced that the only people using social media are college kids and pot smokers.

6.You feel that the newspaper is still a valuable form of advertising.

7. You designed your logo in powerpoint or publisher and all brochures were designed in the same programs.

8. When asked about time commitment you whine about an extra 30 mins a day to grow your business.

9.Your website was designed pre-2005 and has not been updated.

10. You find that building "trust" in a marketplace is a waste of time.

If you fit any of the following criteria... do me a favor and stay off social media.

Can you think of anymore?

You are lecturing me on being disrespectful?

Ha. Chris you have a way with words don't you. We have talked about this through email before. You are a little too harsh for your own good and I respect you for that. If I need to clarify the fact that IT WAS TONGUE IN CHEEK. That's fine.. All business owners in the world, I'm not really making fun of you. Just stating the obvious. It is time to evolve in some way or the other. It doesn't have to be social media but technology is changing the way we do business.

Absolutely. So don't chastise me for speaking my mind. I respect your opinion I can only ask the same respect in return.

I've heard suggestions of adding a tag to HTML 5 for people that don't have a sense of humor.

(for the record, I have no idea whom your comments are to, because they've deleted their comments, perhaps in realization that they took the article too seriously)

It's a much longer story than that. Much, much longer.

It now looks like Kyle is talking to himself like this Garfield Minus Garfield strip:

HAH! And, unfortunately Adam's response is LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL.... :) Funny what happens when the person that we are arguing with, whose brain stalled in logic traffic, leaves the site. Kinda puts a truth to the "from a distance, no one can tell who the idiot is" comment...

Wow.. Chris deleted his Comments? Weird.

Chris, you are ALWAYS pushing a survival of the fittest mentality. You always imply that if people don't deserve it, they shouldn't get it. No bailouts! This is no different. If people fail to adapt to social media, however old they are, then they should get what they deserve. If that means they go out of business, then so be it.

Once again, Chris loves to argue just to argue! Well, this time, you are arguing with yourself! Hah hahaha.

Great Post Kyle. I especially like #7.

Lighten up Francis. (I know your name is not Francis it's a reference to Stripes)

You are stating Kyle's piece is disrespectful as if it is fact. Did you ask him if it was intended to be disrespectful? Did you ask anyone other than yourself if they were offended by his piece?

Your role on SI as permanent Devil's Advocate is provocative and valuable, but deep down, do you really think Kyle wrote this to embarrass people or to play Devil's Advocate as you so often do?

1. You don't keep your internet security, anti-virus and anti-spyware software up to date, and you don't run regular scans.

2. You haven't yet done a risk assessment for the use of social media and formulated policies to prevent practices that could damage your business and its reputation.

3. You keep sensitive business information on the same computer you use for general internet access and social networking, or you don't segregate networks to keep the business data under control (see #1 and #2).

4. You don't monitor employee's use of social networking sites on company assets.

5. You're a regulated entity or your business handles regulated data (see all of the above).

I'm already seeing fake members on small ning groups, getting fake message notices from the same using a fake/hijacked group "from" address (when in doubt about the sender, don't click on the link in the email but check the activity in the group- if the email in your inbox is real, it will be in the inbox on the group's site as well- but even then, don't trust it if you don't know the sender. And don't click on the links to profiles of suspicious members), Facebook account hijacking and scamming (any Facebook friends caught stranded in Europe without any money lately? Please send $1,000...), Twitter malware and the infamous demolition of a Domino's outlet's reputation through a YouTube hoax...

This doesn't mean you shouldn't look for constructive ways to leverage social media, but you do have to be smart about it- if your business is sufficiently dependent on information technology to get value out of utilizing social media to connect people to it, then good security management in the use of social media isn't an option, it's an operational imperative.

tongue-in-cheek Chris. I was looking for the type of feedback Patrick gave.
